Riserva del Fondatore Tenuta La Volta Barolo Nebbiolo 2011

Kalamata olives, dried black cherries, baker’s chocolate, rusted jalopy, black pretzel, tar, and dried violets. Energetic aromatically; evocative of a rustic stone house with a variegated garden of herbs, and perhaps straw roofing. Plum moves forward in a good way rounding out the basket. Powdered cherry and blood orange with the finest tannins seem to liquify into a delicious balancing act between fruit and earth and herbs. Ripe plum, dried red cherries, black cherry juice, black olives, blood orange over grilled meat, sassafras, sage, tarragon, black truffle, chicory and walnut. Sânta Lusa Albana di Romagna 2013

Went upscale 🤠 during Christmas evening with this orange, near-extinct, full bodied Albana di Romagna Secco. Matched only with a frugal dinner of cold cuts, cheese and arugula this orange wine was spot-on! Much welcomed acidity for a 14,5% vol. Tropical fruits, some nutty aromas. A great discovery indeed!

Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Frappato Nero d'Avola 2012

Nero d'Avola and Frappato in roughly equal measure aged in clay amphora. Cherry as the name indicates indeed, as well as strawberry immediately and currants with 2 or so hours of air. A lot of floral notes up front reminded me of Barolo, especially with the mineral notes and the silky, but firm tannins. This is the best wine in a while for me from Sicily not from Mt. Etna.
