Raspberry, dried blackberry and cedar form a distinct potpourri when considered with the dried rose petal and orange bitters. There is a fleeting fruitiness that approaches strawberries dropped into a coniferous fire. Lovely, if firm tannins support a whale of a wine. Amazing depth with Roobios tea leafs, tobacco, graphite, bay leaf, bing cherry, dried black cherry and black currants on carbon paper and campfire ash, driven deep into a charred wormwood and dusty schist. Cherry, boysenberry, crushed stones, stems, and purple flowers. Firm structure with med + tannins and acid. Full body. Less complex on the palate showing less fruit which is overwhelmed by the structure. Okay length. Definitely a food wine. Kalamata olives, dried black cherries, baker’s chocolate, rusted jalopy, black pretzel, tar, and dried violets. Energetic aromatically; evocative of a rustic stone house with a variegated garden of herbs, and perhaps straw roofing. Plum moves forward in a good way rounding out the basket. Powdered cherry and blood orange with the finest tannins seem to liquify into a delicious balancing act between fruit and earth and herbs. Ripe plum, dried red cherries, black cherry juice, black olives, blood orange over grilled meat, sassafras, sage, tarragon, black truffle, chicory and walnut. Gorgeous garnet exhibiting classic orange notes and the tiniest tinges of age, but the aromas of cut cherry and citrus jump from the glass! Blood orange thyme and watermelon on a grill with red currant and just a touch of cranberry and holly to keep it festive. The tar is a hovering ethereal addition that would be a side note, but it hovers like a smoky cloud that adds a dark spirit to the whole, though it feels bright and fresh. A dichotomy, but one that seems an integral part of the whole. Every sip sends your tastebuds racing in a wash of intense red raspberry, plum, violet, thyme, racy citrus and grainy cedar, silky tannin, an unobtrusive touch of vanilla and sweet tobacco! Not what I would think of as a traditional Barolo in style. Young with a lot of fruit at the beginning, joined by coffee, liquorice, spice and some earthiness. Not much tannic structure leads me to believe this is best consumed young. The 2011 was a much better example of the region and winemaker.
