Rocca di Montegrossi

Vigneto Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2009

The 2009 Rocca di Montegrossi San Marcellino is showing significantly more depth, yet also freshness than the last time I tasted it, with balsamic tinged black cherry, giving way to Asian spice, wild herbs, hints of animal musk and brown sauce (think sauerbraten).  Velvety textures flood the palate, showing notable savoriness, as mineral-infused dark red fruits are energized by vibrant acidity with a hint of orange citrus that pops right toward the close. The finish is long, showing adolescent tannins, which provide just enough tension, as it tapers off to notes of roasted plum, hints of tobacco and sage.  It does show a bit more advanced than I’d expect, but this is a far superior bottle over the last one I tasted.  Bravo. #chianticlassic #chianti #tuscanwine #italy — 12 days ago

Plum, fig, leather, mushroom, dried dark fruits, shaved chocolate with a medium body. Probably past its peak.

Neither intense or expressive. Medium complexity driven by Mellon, yellow flowers, and yellow fruit. Touch of earthy funk. Lacked structure. Edgy acid. Short finish. #sodevo #ribollagialla #italy #friuliveneziagiulia #ctbucklinwine — 2 years ago

Tua Rita

Rosso dei Notri SuperTuscan Blend 2016

Greg Ballington

Reminiscing about this amazing value Super Tuscan we had at Officina last week during restaurant week in DC.
2016 Tua Rita Rosso dei Notri
Maremma, Tuscany, Italy
Restaurant week at Officina and a perfect wine for our three course meal. Thank you Natalie for the recommendation. Deep ruby red in appearance. Took some time to open up on the nose but showed layers of mocha, floral, touch of minerals, blue and black fruits and spices. Medium tannins (5.5/10) with balanced acidity and a medium plus body. Plush Merlot definitely comes through in the mid palate with black currants, black cherries, chocolate, espresso and a touch of earthiness. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2023.
Crazy good wine for only $60.00 on a wine list. Made up of 50% Sangiovese with the remainder made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, making this a true Super Tuscan Blend. All the Sangiovese is aged in stainless steel while the rest are aged in barriques. This wine is from an area in the southern part of Tuscany called Maremma, more specifically Upper Maremma in the Colline Metallifare zone. Need to find some more of this IGT. Label is designed by Raffaele De Rosa.

Tenuta Argentiera

Bolgheri Superiore Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

There was a lot that came out of the bottle when the cork was pulled. Rich cherries and pepper immediately hit your nose. I found cherries and raspberries and a slight sweet cigar leaf on the palate. This has a great finish that lingers nicely. #Italy #Livorno #Argentiera #supertuscan — 2 years ago

Tenuta Alzatura

Montefalco Rosso 2015

Vintage 2015 / wine from #umbria central #italy with the unusual blend of #sangiovese #sagrantino and #merlot (on barrel). It was quite harsh in bitters/aftertaste immediately after opening, tannins also. But when it had aeration the wine softened and even shows frivolousness 🙃 Beautiful strawberries in smell, smooth taste. I liked this transformation. Awesome PRQ. I presume it will even gets better within a few years. — a year ago

Torcolato Breganze Vespaiolo 2005

Vintage 2005 / Sometimes one has to be patient. Thirty (!) years ago I asked for this wine in a local wineshop. The owner took a wine encyclopedia and said with some admiration in his voice: thát is a nice wine, sir. They did not sell it. I forgot it. And found the wine a few weeks ago 🙃 nice smell with roses and spices. Awesome balance with perfect vivid acidity. Honey. Nectar. I will buy this wine immediately when I see it again. For sure😄 #breganze #italy — 2 years ago
