Azahara Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir Rosé

It’s time to pop the bubbles! Happy #FizzyFriday wine lovers 🙌

A big thanks to Anna from Wingara Wine Group for sending over this delicious Azahara Sparkling Rosé NV summer fizz for us to try.

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes for for this rosè sparkling are grown in NW Victoria. And fun fact for you, the vineyard sits right alongside orange, citrus and mango groves 🥭 🍊

“Each year, the best parcels of Chardonnay age folded into a modified solera system, so that fresh flavours mingle with older, complex characters. Pinot Noir is then blended in and secondary fermentation (Charmat) is them initiated to produce bubbles and bring everything into harmony.”

If you don’t know what a solera system is, hit up google. I learnt all about them in my #WSET3 course. Very cool!

It retails at a extremely approachable $15 and I must say, it went down a treat in our house...

It’s a pretty sparkly pale peach colour in the glass. The nose has a hint of minerality mixed with apricots/peaches and cream (it was making me think of cheesecake😋) with hints of grapefruit sherbet, red berries and traces of flowers 💐. In the mouth it has some fruit sweetness mid palate but a lovely, clean dry finish. Well balanced with a smooth mousse (mouthfeel). Great value.

This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

La La Land Rosé Blend 2019

Sunday Rosé session anyone?

The sun is shining and I’m in the mood to drink pink 💕

I recently received this #sample from our friends at La La Land wines (thank you 🌹). It’s from 2019 and made from
Pinot Noir in the saignée method.

Saignée or ‘bleeding’ in English refers to when a winemaker sets out to make a red wine but also might make a rosé wine on the side. If a winemaker wants to impart more colour and flavour into a red wine during maceration they might remove or ‘bleed off’ some of the pink juice early on. The juice left is more concentrated for the red wine desired and the bonus by-product is the removed juice can then be fermented separately to make a rosé. That’s some delicious multi-tasking!

In the glass we found this one a pale copper shade. On the nose it made me think of freshly picked Strawberries, watermelon and refreshing citrus. While in the mouth it’s fruity, zingy and covers the mouth with delicious flavours of strawberries/raspberries and grapefruit.

This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

Legion Shiraz 2019

I hear it’s hot over in WA, but it’s definitely not here in Gippsland today with a high of 12 degrees 🥶

Though it’s not all bad, as it simply means it’s red wine weather in my books 🍷🙌

I received this sample from Curtis Family Wines (thank you!) in South Australia. It’s a 2019 Shiraz from their ‘Legion’ series - wines made for everyday enjoyment. That retails for $25 and it’s safe to say I was feeling pretty warm after a couple of glasses 🤗

Here are our notes:

It’s a lovely deep garnet colour in the glass. On the nose it’s a bit farmy and rustic (think mushrooms, olives and pepper) yet there’s a delicious berry jam and hint of chocolate coming through too. In the mouth there’s a hint of tobacco mixed with vanilla and pomegranate with a lovely dry finish.

This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

First Drop Wines

Vivo Arneis 2019

I’m loving the amount of Arneis popping up around the country. If you haven’t come across this white Italian grape variety yet, this ‘little rascal’ (yes that’s literally what it means!) is crisp, dry and aromatic.

I’ve had some great Arneis from the likes of Vineyard 28 and Paul Nelson Wines in Western Australia, Holm Oak in Tasmania and Dal Zotto in Victoria’s King Valley.

And now I have another one to add to that list - introducing First Drop’s ‘Vivo’ 2019 Arneis from South Australia’s Adelaide Hills region. A big thanks to Good Pair Days for sending this sample bottle over 🙌

I also love the sound of Good Pair Days matching recipe for this wine - Ham & Cheese Bake - yum!

This wine is also #vegan 🌱 friendly.

In the glass the wine is fairly pale with a lemon tinge. On the nose it’s floral and herby with some peach and nectarine coming through. It really has a gorgeous smell to it, in fact I would love a bottle of it in perfume form 😂 In the mouth it’s a mix of sweet navel oranges 🍊 , nashi pear 🍐 , green apples 🍏 and lime. Smooth and crisp!

Spinning Top

Marlborough Pinot Gris 2019

Have you come across Spinning Top wines from New Zealand?

I hadn’t until I was recently sent a few samples to try (thank you!!). This 2019 Pinot Gris from Marlborough retails for $16. So what makes this range special? Well...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ant and Patrick Moore are the winemaker brothers behind the brand. They drew their inspiration from another set of brothers - Ray and Charles Eames - a prolific design duo. They’re the duo behind the short film ‘Tops’ - an artistic exploration of the ancient art of top-making and spinning.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Like wine, a spinning top can be of simple creation, such as a thumb tack sent into orbit, through to something more complex and elaborate. A spinning top is set in motion yet can change direction and has a serendipitous path - we can guide it to start with, but nature is the primary driver” - Ant Moore.

Therefore the winemaking process is as natural as possible made with minimal intervention and nominal sulphur and finings. But what does it taste like?

Well here are our thoughts:

It’s a pale yellow shade in the glass with a hint of grey. It’s really vibrant on the nose with nectarines, minerality and fresh candied lemon coming through for me. While in the mouth it’s smooth and fruit forward with a nice acidic clean finish. Think stonefruit with a lick of grapefruit.

This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.
