Don't be fooled by the recent rush of French wines to grace my palette. Those who know me know that I like to keep a Toscana or a Brunello around for good measure. But then @Kyle Harvey put the hard sell on Etna wines so I gave it a shot. From this point on, I will forever be on the lookout for more. The volcanic terroir and sun soaked mountainside make for the perfect climate to produce an exceptional wine. Comprised of 80% Mascalese and 20% Cappucio, the wine is remarkably well structured with loads of nuance. Fruits abound and silky tannins make this #Etna a banger. — 9 years ago

One of the marquis producers on Mount Etna, Benanti's Stella della Contessa is their flagship red, made mostly of Nerello Mascalese (80%) and the rest Nerello Cappuccio. This has some age being a 2004, but still shows plenty of fruitful youth with a dose.of tertiary. Drink this now but it should round out with another 2-3 years of age. Plenty of fruit, the tannins are fully integrated and silky. There is a slight bitter note that sticks out, and not exactly like a ripe blood orange, it reminds me more of menthol. #etna #sicily #benanti — 10 years ago

Not sure this day would ever happen but alas, the magic of Etna and the magic of Cave Ox in Solicchiata, we decided that it was time - and on a day when the producer invited us over to join him at his table, we got to experience this living, ever evolving tribute to Etna, coming from 100+ year old prephylox vines from 910 m ASL from the "Grand Contrada" of Barbabaecchi. Not to mention the kick ass 2014 vintage. It was intoxicatingly fragrant with earthy red fruits erupting from the glass, dense, concentrated, complex and constantly evolving flavors with spice, leather, and seductive dark cherry, and a dreamingly long mouthfeel that lingered and danced along the palette.
