Reminiscing about this amazing value Super Tuscan we had at Officina last week during restaurant week in DC.
2016 Tua Rita Rosso dei Notri
Maremma, Tuscany, Italy
Restaurant week at Officina and a perfect wine for our three course meal. Thank you Natalie for the recommendation. Deep ruby red in appearance. Took some time to open up on the nose but showed layers of mocha, floral, touch of minerals, blue and black fruits and spices. Medium tannins (5.5/10) with balanced acidity and a medium plus body. Plush Merlot definitely comes through in the mid palate with black currants, black cherries, chocolate, espresso and a touch of earthiness. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2023.
Crazy good wine for only $60.00 on a wine list. Made up of 50% Sangiovese with the remainder made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, making this a true Super Tuscan Blend. All the Sangiovese is aged in stainless steel while the rest are aged in barriques. This wine is from an area in the southern part of Tuscany called Maremma, more specifically Upper Maremma in the Colline Metallifare zone. Need to find some more of this IGT. Label is designed by Raffaele De Rosa.

Good drinking #supertuscan though not too exciting. Medium tannins and tart cherry. 50% sangiovese, 25% cab, 25% merlot — a year ago
Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore 1999
Plum, fig, leather, mushroom, dried dark fruits, shaved chocolate with a medium body. Probably past its peak.

There was a lot that came out of the bottle when the cork was pulled. Rich cherries and pepper immediately hit your nose. I found cherries and raspberries and a slight sweet cigar leaf on the palate. This has a great finish that lingers nicely. #Italy #Livorno #Argentiera #supertuscan — a year ago
Entry level “Super Tuscan”. This blend of Cabernet , Merlot and Sangiovese is pleasant to drink with expected flavours of cherry, blackberry, some spice and a little chocolate. Good with pizza or simple pasta with meat sauce. Nice entry level wine but not a cellar keeper.

2007 Orma Toscana from Tenuta Sette Ponti. Bordeaux blend from Tuscany. 40% Cab Franc 20% Cab Sauv 40% Merlot. The wine spent 12 months in French bariques and another 12 in the bottle. Dark berries, spice, with hints of Licorice and chocolate. Well integrated tannins and a nice full finish. Should drink well for another 4-5 years. #tuscanwine #italianredwine #supertuscan #maremma #orma #tenutasetteponti #bordeauxblend #2007tuscanvintage #goodredwine #nobleestates — 8 months ago
Holiday vino! This little beauty came in my last shipment from Foxen, one of my favorite producers in Santa Barbara county. The Guillermo Grasso is Foxen’s take on a new world Tuscan - a 50:50 Sangiovese (Faith Vineyard)-Cabernet Sauvignon (Vogelzang Vineyard). 22 months in French Oak - 40% new - gives this wine a hefty punch of tannin and body. While the Vogelzang Vineyard is well known for producing wonderfully complex Cabernet, I’m not as familiar with Faith Vineyard - however a quick Google search shows that the Vineyard, located in Santa Ynez, specializes in Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc on a 7 acre plot. Though Foxen recommends cellaring this one for a few years to mellow out - I’m drinking it early. Paired with fish tacos. ~$35 | #foxen #santaynezvalley #supertuscan
On the eyes: Deep, concentrated blood red, bright - but hazy (unfined and unfiltered), med+ stain, med+ tears, no gas.
On the nose: Strawberry, cherry, rose hips, pencil shavings, tobacco, and a bit of earthy funk. Med+ alcohol.
On the tongue: Med+ acid, med+ tannin, med+ alcohol, full body, firm and tight. Red currants, raspberry, floral high notes, cigar box, and worn leather. A bit cloying and rambunctious - it would benefit from a year or two in the cellar, but still very yummy! Decant it and enjoy! Merry Christmas! — a year ago
