Planeta 2007 Santa Cecilia from 100% Nero d’Avola. 2nd bottle for me and every bit as good as the first. Deep red in the glass. Dark berry fruit, herbs, leather, tobacco and cocoa on the long finish. This 2011 Petra is a varietal Sangiovese from vineyards near the town of Suvereto, on the hills of the Val di Corona. A modern winery in a region the with vine growing roots (no pun intended) going back to the Greeks and Etruscans. Even after an hour in the decanter this wine has not fully opened. In spite of that, it is still very smooth on the palate with a noticeable earthiness, leather, tobacco and quite a bit of licorice on the finish. Good and juicy acidity, yet tannins are a little tight. Will definitely benefit from a little more ageing.

Full disclosure, I am a big Aglianico fan, so I might be a little biased! The 100% Aglianico grapes for this wine are grown on the hills of Taurasi in Campania at 450 meters above sea level. The fertile soils are rich in minerals and volcanic ash and calcium, giving this wine some of its distinctive character. Pre-fermentation maceration at low temperature, maceration on the skins for 20 days and malolactic fermentation in barrique rounds out vinification. The wine is aged for 3 months in steel and 24 months in French barriques. Sampled after 3 hours in a decanter, this wine has character and an elegant boldness. The nose reveals dark cherry, spice and a little pepper. On the palate it is full bodied, with black cherry, tobacco, black pepper, leather and I hate say it, tar. The tannins are well balanced but still show layers of complexity. A lovely elegant wine that should continue to develop over the next 7-10 years. An absolute lovely example of a well made Aglianico from Nativ.

2007 Planeta Santa Cecilia. Nero d’Avola from Noto in the far south of Sicily. Ruby red in colour, the black fruits have matured well. Deep and full in the mouth, herbs, leather, some tobacco and a pleasant chocolate lingering on the long finish. Really enjoyed this wine.

2007 Orma Toscana from Tenuta Sette Ponti. Bordeaux blend from Tuscany. 40% Cab Franc 20% Cab Sauv 40% Merlot. The wine spent 12 months in French bariques and another 12 in the bottle. Scanzano is in Maremma in southernTuscany. Down here the local clone of Sangiovese is known as Morellino, the growing season is longer and hotter than Chianti. This allows the Morellino di Scansano to fully ripen with higher sugar levels. The wine has a dark colour in the glass, and is full bodied in the mouth. Expect blackberry, spice, a little tartness and firm tannins. Tannins are not too prominent so I would not expect this to mature much after 3-5 years. Drink up!

Heavy floral notes with lavender and violet, carnation, cherry blossom and red rose, booming amid dried black cherry espresso and cocoa, though distinctly separate. Dark toasted sesame, rye bread, and crumbled earth. Bright cherry palate turns dusty in all the right ways, leaning into cocoa nib and espresso oils. Lovely and dry with dried cran and red currant but exhibits miles of lingering blood orange citrus and crystalline cherry. Gorgeous. Eternally evolving and all of it amazing. The concrete egg has made something ethereal that also shows a mysterious depth. Great range.

Villa Cafaggio Cortaccio. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A nice garnet colour in the glass. This 2008 is lovely. From the Panzano Estate, this wine was aged for 18 months in new French Oak. The result? A well balanced Tuscan Cabernet that delivers flavours of leather, tobacco, herbs and some earthiness. Well balanced acidity and tannins. Lovely wine.

2011 was a good year for Valle Reale in Abruzzo., very similar weather to 2007. The Sant’Eusanio vineyard is a small patch nestled among pine woods. At 497 m it is the highest zone in Valle Reale, this helps with the large diurnal swing. The vines were planted in 2002 in soil that is poor and pebbly This produces a unique “mountain expression” of Montepulciano with high acidity and fresh, slightly lighter fruit than expected. This bottle was opened 2 days ago, still has lots of acidity, cherry, a little spice and herbal notes. This vintage should be good for another 5-7 years and represents a good bargain.

So I put this one up for a few years. After 10 years, the cork broke on removal. But I was able to get the rest out with little incident thanks to YouTube. The wine poured a beautiful blood red. The flavors were deep and jammy of dried fruits like other reviewers have mentioned. It is dry with a modest finish.
