A so very #tuscan #sangiovese but a slightly lighter and more acidic wine than typical Chiantis. It needs time to open up but wild cherry, bramble fruit, bit of forest floor aromas, pretty bracing acidity countered by some amped up yet elegant tannins. Interestingly, it ends up working quite well as I enjoy this totally "un-jammy" wine.

Pure Sangiovese from Montemercurio in Montepulciano. Deep ruby coloured in the glass. Traditional Sangiovese flavours, including cherries, spice, earthiness and a hint of balsamic. Good mouth feel and acidity leaving a robust finish. This 2011 Petra is a varietal Sangiovese from vineyards near the town of Suvereto, on the hills of the Val di Corona. A modern winery in a region the with vine growing roots (no pun intended) going back to the Greeks and Etruscans. Even after an hour in the decanter this wine has not fully opened. In spite of that, it is still very smooth on the palate with a noticeable earthiness, leather, tobacco and quite a bit of licorice on the finish. Good and juicy acidity, yet tannins are a little tight. Will definitely benefit from a little more ageing.

I’ve had all my best #antinori bottles in nice restaurants. This 2010 #chianticlassicoriserva Riserva has that classic earthy, slightly spicy #sangiovese yet up front with dark fruit, expressive cherry flavors. Other reviewers noticed harsh tannins but I found them well integrated. So satisfying with a nice Italian meal. — 3 months ago
