I think this is my first time tasting a Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Let me tell you, this 2012 Pinot Noir from Clos de la Tech has aged well! 🍷 A funky nose with aromas of strawberries, some plum, and aged red wine notes of mushrooms, wet earth and truffle. I love a good funky Pinot Noir! 🍷

2013 and it’s still alive and kicking. As it opens up it begins to express all of its tropical fruit aromas like mango, papaya and passion fruit. It has a creamy aroma and creamy texture from its fermentation and ageing in oak. It’s like a light coconut and white chocolate powder dashed on top. Paul Hobbs is one of the greatest producers of California pinot noir. Opulent, floral and fruits forward in youth. This is my 2nd bottle of 2012 since 2015. The fruits have somewhat settled down. I remember my first experience with this floral, beautiful wine as clearly as if it had happened just yesterday.

Dried blackberries and rich black and pruned plums. Black cherry dusted bituminous. Cedar and wet violets locked in an energetic embrace. Baked strawberry aromas and dried rose petal. Dried lavender emerges from bing cherry and red currant with a blackberry and bitter chocolate entourage. Touches of ginger and chicory on a medium full palate that bursts with Mallow blossom and blueberry. Intermittently tart, tangy, rich and floral, with a medicinal nod in the dried aromatics, that is a welcome and pleasant diversion. Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Mike Grgich, one of the founders of Grgich Hills, was the one who put California chardonnays on the world wine map winning the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 with his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. Probably more well-known for its chardonnay, Grgich Hills also makes great age-worthy cabs. This 2010 cab is fully integrated. Beautiful. Rich, dark berry fruits with cedar, mocha, leather notes.

11% Mataro (Mouvedre)

This Syrah dominated wine exhibits aromas of red currant, raspberries, plums, thyme, cedar, oak, and some pepper. On the palate, you'll get a fruit driven viscous sensation probably as a result of the malolactic fermentation. The seemingly sweet tobacco flavors linger on the palate with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

14.2% ABV. Medium-plus body.

This Southern Rhone style wine did great on a Thursday night! 🍷
