Spice Wars version. Christmas in a glass. The nose is incredible with gingerbread, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, sticky toffee, cocoa. I was almost scared to drink because there was so much going on. The palate is more subdued on the initial where you get oatmeal and chocolate then it explodes with wonderful spices above but they all meld together wonderfully. Finish is super long with bitter chocolate and spices lingering. Wonderful beer. — 5 years ago

The wines of Roger Sabon have been on my radar for about ten years now and I have always thought the “Prestige” designation was, pound-for-pound, one of the better values in all of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. However, for one reason or another, I never seem to drink them that often. This particular bottle of “Le Secret des Sabon” was a lone singleton resting in my cellar since release. My wife, after an unusually exhausting week of work, said she wanted to drink something “impressive”...which means to me that the juice better not suck. And while “Le Secret” has a reputation for being one of the great wines from the entire appellation, I was taking some risk when I selected this bottle since I had no personal experience with it. As soon as I pulled the cork, it was clear this was going to be a special experience. Glass staining garnet with a touch of color that looks almost brown-ish however, there are no signs of decomposition. There is, however, a fairly decent amount of fine sediment. The fruit...well...the fruit is simply sensational. We’re talking fistfuls of the purest raspberries and cherries with some star anise, slightly burned pie crust and black pepper. This is a wine of tremendous texture and balance. Medium acid and medium plus tannins, the latter of which are so fine and silky. The ABV is stated as 15% but it’s so well hidden you would hardly notice. My only wish was that “Le Secret des Sabon” wasn’t so expensive...but there is no doubt about its quality. Drinking so well now but could easily hold for longer if necessary. — 5 years ago

Hops: Hallertau (Yakima WA).
Yeast: Kolsch Ale
Bottled unfined/unfiltered.

Über-bubble, if-just hazed, loose ocean foam, goes poof!, then just nebulae. Oily lacing of misfit moustaches. One swirl, though, and instant star nursery. Tangelo-lemon goodness blasts from the glass! Pure tropical mango from the tree. Grapefruit aspirations. Equally bright palate with the focus on a mineral-citrus that finds the perfect palatial trajectory, and sticks the landing on four hops. Namely, Mosaic for the baptismal tesserae, Citra for the gilded apse, Hallertau Blanc for the hallowed ground, and galaxy for the space between. Amen to the combo. Tartaric reverberations through a briny air, really quite evocative. This tastes the way Florida sometimes smells just after a rain. Tropical and saturated, but clean and spring-y. Jasmine, sweet grapefruit pith, lime and lemon. Really a great beer! .

This Brett-kin has been languishing for some time. Smells fresh though. Holding its snowy crown over hazy orange-amber. Graphic lacing (thick lines). Gourd-y with funky white pepper on the nose, nutmeg and clove right behind. This smells incredible with orange blossoms, caramel and lime. Delicious entry with lime peel, lemonade, candid ginger, clove, bing cherry, candied red grapefruit peel, white raspberry, star fruit and of course cinnamon and nutmeg trimmings. What a beer when you wait for the Brett-citrus to evolve. Pump it up! — 7 years ago

Texas wines have grown. This is an outstanding blend of Grenache Syrah and Mourvèdre from Salt Lick Vineyard. This is a complex wine with great structure and finesse. Great to see the Lone Star State wines mature and compete in the world stage. Visited the Fall Creek Vineyards. Well worth it can’t get it retail because of the limited production but can get it online. New release of the 2016 vintage. Excellent! — 8 years ago

So, what about a Dutch wine?? Yes, you read it correctly, wine…not beer. They are starting to make wines in the south of the country, Limburg. We visited the St. Martinus winery last September. This was a white blend of Pinot gris and Souvignier gris (I had never heard ofF). It was okay. Had green undernotes and a bit of that agave flavor that I don’t care for much, but I did like the grapefruit/star fruit tangy-ness. It was refreshing, good acidity. A good wine to have when a Dutchy wins the first Tour de France for women!!! — 4 years ago

There's a great video on YT on what a Saison is. In short, it's a farmhouse ale (pale or sometimes red) that was historically served to farm workers as a clean source of hydration. Without any distinctive characters and lower in alcohol then, the "Saison" only really gained it's signature when the house in question came into the equation. Also, based on my research, the checkered "Vielle Provision" yellow labels are the export labels.

As it was here, the Dupont Brewery's Saison is generally cloudy, very carbonated via bottle conditioning, zesty and spicy, bitter with a hint of sour, and a dry hoppy finish. For me, this is truly "The beer for all seasons" - the flavours are just so versatile. Perfect for a warm summer afternoon in the park, yet complex enough to pair with a 3-star dish. — 6 years ago

Beautiful sparkler from one of the best in the US. Bottle fermented and aged on the yeast for 10 years! 2009 was a warm growing season in Oregon, and the fruit for this vintage was harvested in 6 days! This is a creamy textured sparkler with hints of roasted hazelnut, quince/pear, and brioche. Beautifully long finish. 59% Pinot and 42% Chardonnay. 80% from Knudsen Vineyard and 20% from Lone Star Vineyard. Only 1,500 cases produced. It’s one of the best spelling wines I’ve had from Argyle. Nemesis IPA by “Zero Issue Brewing” with its intoxicating aroma, intense grapefruit, passionfruit and citrus notes is an absolute stunner. 7.3 alc/vol. But that wasn’t the star of the night out in Calgary with Mrs A. We stumbled into the Charbar Restaurant featuring a culinary blending of Argentine wood-fired grilled entrees, and quiet Spanish and Italian notes. We shared a porterhouse steak from Alberta beef which maybe the best that we have ever had. Mitch the manager, the bartender Andrew, and the wait staff Hillary, Patrick and Shannon are the best. When in Calgary the Charbar is a must! The beer is a 9.0 and the Charbar is a 10.0. Cheers 🍻🇨🇦 — 7 years ago

Solid crown just off-white and slow to dissipate. Caramel and vanilla scrawled on oak, rubber band and pencil with golden apple and just a dusting of cinnamon. Tropical notes of dried pineapple, lemon cookie, peach skin, mocha and ripe butternut. Creamy, and initially caramel, but descends to tamarind, ginger, bitter orange, star anise, dark toasted oak, cinnamon bark, lemon zest, and finally rounds out to vanilla bean.
