Killer Red

Domaine Jamet

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1999

One of my favorite vintages for Jamet with a killer nose showing lots of dark fruits, smoked meat, blood, iron, spice box, mineral & violet. — 7 days ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1961

Taken to Hawksmoor in NYC for our uncle’s 75th. Decanted in hotel for 7 hrs before dinner. Dark reddish amber edges with dark tawny color center. Opaque. Great aged Bordeaux nose. Notes of black fruit, tobacco and cigar, cassis, old desk wood, saddle leather, some anise, some barnyard and a little mint. Rich and silky in the mouth. Long finish. The bottle (mid shoulder) wasn’t in as good of condition as the one we had a few weeks ago, but the outcome was similar. Family and the Somm all loved it, as did I. — 16 days ago

Fine description

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Lovely nose of slow cooked beef and heirloom pork, red and black roses, brown bread stuffing, fine tabak, vanilla-in-bread, dusty black cherry, dried black currant and espresso powder. Black olive rounds the palate in a textural wave that intensifies to charred grape gravy, very sharp forest berry, lavender, holly, pine nettle, and sage. Younger offering here but fully integrated and freshly offering dark bark and dark castings with lively fruit and floral punctuation.

Ridge Vineyards

Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2002

45 min decant(decent chunky/fine sediment). A remarkable medium garnet color with bricking. On the nose: beautiful perfumed notes burst from the glass with sour cherry, mint, dusty earth, currants, wet cedar, green bell pepper....could sniff all night! Taste: soft and round, smooth, elegant wine with raspberry, cedar, currants, musky earth, and a nice dark chocolate cherry finish. YUM! A wine that has hit its stride over the past few years with time to go. — 6 days ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

32 years and going strong. Chanterelle and porcini with earth notes and crushed cherries and baked plum. Palate of dried blackberries and alluvial strolls, black currant and smoke. Cedar-cinnamon-tobacco triumvirate. Gloriously strong and hearty.

Slight mind freak! Residual pepper and heavy smoke…red/black fruits, leather and burnt stones. What a fun wine — 7 days ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

Deep purple in color with a short purple rim.

Pretty nose of blueberries, cooked black cherries, blackberries, figs, cedar, vanilla, spices, chocolates, earth, herbs, coffee, tobacco, licorice and black pepper.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, currants, black cherries, raisins, dried figs, vanilla, cedar, cola, spices, dark chocolates, coffee, earth, bitter herbs and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley. Feels like a Napa Cabernet with a Bordeaux touch. Fruity and rich, yet elegant.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 2 hours in the decanter, but it definitely needs longer than that.

What a great mouthfeel. I just love these Napa Bordeaux blends.

Still young and would be better in 5 to 10 years. Could be a 97+ point wine in 10 years. Will continue to age nicely in the next 20 years.

Thank you John for sharing this with me.

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

94 points.

$500.

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 1998

Worried about the light, “thin” first impressions… but never fear. No Brett..round and fruit forward… resolved tannins…a teeny bit missing acid, but a superb foil for Scottish Chateaubriand on this cold Edinburg evening. Juicy cherry with a hint of forest floor. One of the “good” bottles of older Beaucastel. — 6 days ago

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Baron de Pichon-Longueville Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

Wow. Very dark rubi rose, slightly bricky at the rim. Nose of blackcurrant, cedar, dark cherries and a hint of spices. Very elegant, complex and long in the mouth, one of the fines Pauillacs we had in a good deal of time, and we had some :) this is an outstanding bottle by all means. Enthusiastically recommended. — 5 months ago

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

So elegant and sexy. Deep ruby. Wet forest on the nose. The palate had so many levels. Velvety, full, dark chocolate, integrated oak, massively long finish. After 8 hrs still taste violets in my palate. Such a special bottle. Truly lucky to have enjoyed this amongst good friend. — 18 days ago
