Midnight black with an espresso hood that fades to impenetrable darkness. Leaving trails of fallen stars for lacing, cueing fiery gas dragons of unctuous mirage. Black molasses and treacle coil about sticky cherry reductions, curled claws of darkest chocolate and shadowy espresso. Warm smoke of charred barrel pops from the gooey depths of this imposing cauldron. Alas the treat! Dark, pure chocolate with a spike of candied cherry turns bitter and evasive as it storms headlong into the ashes of the night on a broomstick of gnarled oak imperial; fire spitting cinders in its billowing wake. Yellow watermelon orange, border of opacity. Loose, bright, white foam. Suddenly enough, none, but fast and oily brain grooves and amorphous blob-people trace out the forlorn and droopy lacings. Cheer up! The nose is full of concentrated tangerine zest, with look-alive lime, and lemon scented sunshine glinting off of shattered space debris. There is something so ‘dessicated lemon’ here, with a lambic-balsam edge, but also gasoline and lemongrass-white pepper. Anomalistic. Tasty sour pear, grapefruit, and funky golden plum all burst in sour unison, leaving pineapple to prickle amidst the pieces, and apricot shows ripely, timely and dedicatedly sweet, perhaps even slightly dried. Really amazing and complex, seamless without becoming divergent or clunky. Magnolia, jasmine and daisy perfumes. Perfectly balanced mouthfeel delivers grapefruit-creamsicle with bits of lemon peel in a marmalade pudding entry. This beauty turns on lime and juicy grapefruit with a dash of white pepper, lemon oil, tangerine, and an awesome burst of vivacious and near-effervescent lemon tart and grapefruit soda. Motor oil monicker is apt for this black beauty. Big top springs into action in latte tones, and is pulled back to the viscous tar. Tea leaves lacing slide slowly to obscurity. Licorice and chai nose flecked with sparkling candies ginger and an array of mints. Medium heavy mouthfeel lifted by ethereal spices flaunts cardamom, clove, allspice, nutmeg and citrus oils, dark sugar and coffee notes framed by oak and buried vanilla. Sticky finish lingers; pair with ginger snaps. Must be fall.

Lemon pudding, peel and zest nose also suggests orange peel freshness, pineapple bits, coconut, and lime. Perfect interplay of acid versus creaminess here, with the edge tending to acid in the minutiae. Papaya smooth, with guava and dragonfruit, paw paw, soursop, apple and pear extras, banana essence, lychee, lime pith and grapefruit. Exquisite tropical panoply, that rivals many of the best. Incredible job here! Lingering pineapple coppery note, and library of citric pith permutations. .

Dark as muddied apricot juice. Slick and unstable head whisking away in oily retreat, with rapid lacings of unraveling ghost smokes turning will-o-the-wisp. Apricot-pineapple with a sweet kerosene note. Bananas and Honeycomb cereal. Lime pith and soursop secondary smells. Plantains dried at medium ripeness, lemon pith, and tangerine threads on the palate. Connecticut tobacco leaf. Chalky lemon. There is such an interesting dichotomy between the malt caramel notes initially, and the overwhelming, cancelling pithy citrus, which obnubilates the former. Kumquat and starfruit combine on the finish with lemon tart candy and grapefruit reduction. .

It’s been three years since my last review of this little slice of double trouble. Loose and thorny crown of creamy white with cartoon bone lacing plus bubble font. Golden overall, but reddish tinges turn it pink. Banana bread, with honey butter, a bit of molasses and orange marmalade scented, but the breakfast stops there. Healthy dollops of of honey buoy herbs de Provence, golden apple, juniper sharpness, lemon-arabica, pecan, and extra lavender. .

Lager is only slightly misleading here. Red-black with creamed coffee crown. That laces and effaces with ram horn arcs that ride the ring around blackest space. Kona coffee and medium-dark chocolate charms lead coconut and malt notes into vanilla bean and creme cookie with ginger snap ghosts.
