Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1999

1999 vintage. Nice fill. Used a Durand. Solid cork with approx 50% saturation. Decanted and tasted after two hours. That decided Lynch-Bages medium heavy bod. Has dropped some, not all, of the overt primary fruit load. Pleasant spices and feminine characteristics easily noted and cataloged. Pretty harmonious now tho with a little chunkiness/tannic blessing as more of a fleeting kiss vs a big hug. Could easily go another decade in this ensemble. 6.14.26. — 8 days ago

Mount Veeder Syrah 2007

Intense dark fruits, black pepper, mineral as well, still quite primary and very structured, balanced with a very long, lingering finish, but based upon how unevolved this is at age 18, I’d wait until this is 25-30 years from the vintage to drink, really great potential!! — 8 months ago

Château Larcis Ducasse

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

In the nose this Château Larcis Ducasse 2009 offers an inviting and complex bouquet. Primary aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries are prominent. These are complemented by secondary notes of cedar, tobacco, and a hint of graphite. As the wine opens up, it reveals layers of truffle, leather, and sweet spices such as cinnamon and cloves. This simply is a great nose

In the mouth the palate is rich, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced. The wine displays an impressive structure with silky, well-integrated tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry dominate, supported by nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, and earthy undertones. This is a real treat because it’s so easy drinking.

The finish is long, smooth, and elegant, lingering with notes of dark fruit, vanilla, and a touch of smokiness.

Overall this wine is an exemplary wine from Saint-Émilion, showcasing the best characteristics of the vintage and type of wine, mine kind of a wine 😋. It is a wine of depth, complexity, and refinement, so no regrets here 💪.

Brut Champagne Blend 1989

A crescendo of aromas leap from the glass. Vibrant and energetic palate, still quite youthful! It’s so complex, expressive and layered with the perfect balance of primary and secondary characteristics. A gastronomic Champagne that is in a perfect place. — 5 years ago

Seavey Vineyard

Caravina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

This note is really about potential more than anything else. I found this bottle to be waaaaay to young. It’s got the fruit and the structure to be outstanding but it’s just too primary; all knees and elbows. I would hold these for another few years before checking back in. — 7 years ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

Richebourg Pinot Noir 2009

Slightly deeper more ruby , wide rim but brighter and redder , less garnet than the RSV . Younger looking certainly . Deeper , spicier with darker fruits on the nose , some blackberry , dark cherry , exotic spices , pomegranate tea , violets , quite exuberant and dashing . On the palate this is denser and richer , deeper more velvety fruits , dark cherry , blackberry , spice and rounded but noticeable tannin . Balanced acidity. Quite gritty finish, darker and richer , long suave dark fruit finish . Really quite primary still, though with more time this does show some more wet slate and mineral side. This grows in the glass becoming more expressive and complex , showing something new each time you come back to the glass . Enjoyable due to the richness of fruit , but probably deserves more time , very promising however , the richness and decadence of 2009 seems to suit Richebourg . Better in 5 years and will last well a further decade if not more . — 2 months ago

En mag. So young, still. Even more primary than the 07 from 750 two days ago. Clove, cardamom, dusty cocoa and medium tannin. — a year ago

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

A murky purple magenta color, but still appears young. Very aromatic with beautiful notes of blackberry, perfume followed by sandalwood, wet rich soil, pencil lead and sweet oak. Tastes young with tannins still present leaving many years for aging. Primary flavors of blackberry cedar and bitter sweet chocolate with secondary notes of cassis, new leather, pepper, dried herbs, and gravel giving it a long dry finish. Should pair with our Neapolitan marinara pizza and pasta dinner tonight. Looking forward to see what another several years will add to its flavor profile. — 2 years ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2014

Now I see how this wine can be so divisive. LOTS of brett at first, more band-aid than barnyard. Takes a while to get past it and then lots of exotic spices show up. But after 40 minutes in the glass still nothing primary. It’s got the funk I can appreciate in some good left bank Bordeaux but also feels somewhat single-threaded. — 5 years ago

Blanc des Millénaires Champagne Chardonnay 1995

An extraordinary bottle that is a near-perfect blanc de blancs. Medium gold in color, the wine has a beautiful mousse even at 25 years of age, with fine bubbles and a tantalizing aroma conveying powerful primary, secondary and tertiary notes. The nose shows fresh and preserved lemon, green and golden apple, acacia, hawthorn, hazelnut, wet stone and flint. On the palate, the wine is dry but has a wonderful medium-bodied richness. There is vibrant, high acidity that gives the wine great energy. Flavors include smoke, flint, wet stone, preserved lemon, green apple, golden apple, dried acacia, hazelnut, and a hint of roasted coffee along with a pleasant saline quality. The wine has a very long finish and is compelling to drink now though it can certainly age for another decade or more. Outstanding. — 6 years ago

Clos de Tart Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2002

Dark tawny. Almost opaque. Tart fruit nose. Notes of tart cherries, tart rhubarb, tart oak bark, tart spice and a little tart mocha and tart menthol. Rich fruit in the mouth. A bit hot. Still primary. Needs more time in the bottle, or lots of time in the decanter to open up. — 7 years ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

So seamless and delicious. We had 3 forty year olds at dinner so this was a birth year wine for the majority of our dinner. Last had a couple years ago, and this remains very good. Not primary, but also wouldn’t guess 40 years old. Really nice pairing with a roast leg of lamb on Christmas. — 6 months ago

Silver Oak

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Had a bottle year ago. Blend of 95% Cab Sauv, 4% Merlot, rest Petit Verdot, Malbec & Cab Franc, blended then aged for 24 mos in 50% new & 50% once-used American oak. Deep Ruby, youthful aromas of black fruit, sweet cacao & complex spice. Palate shows flavors of rich ripe juicy berries & cherries, core of sweet fruit with oak & vanilla notes. Nicely integrated firm, graceful tannins, long finish, displays primary fruits on ending, developing some secondary aging, nice. Excellent. — 4 years ago

Seavey Vineyard

Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

2008 vintage in January 2021. Double-decanted 2 hours before serving. That was helpful as it opened into a big wine that is still fairly primary with big fruits and some graphite. Plenty of backbone and will last another 7-10 years easily but want to try this again in 1-2. — 5 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Dirty old world Bordeaux on the nose. Slightly smoky and barnyard. Palate was deliciously balanced with red primary fruits. With recorking this bottle would have lasted another five to seven years. — 6 years ago
