Beaune in the USA
Tasted blind. Red purple in the glass. Looks young. Killer nose. Everyone smiles. Notes of red cherries, tan spice, rhubarb, some rosemary and a little candied fruit. Very refined in the mouth. Masculine. Very balanced, with ample fruit and matching structure. Has the precision of a great Rousseau. As good as burgundy gets. Guessed 71 Rousseau Chambertin. This goes on the list of all time greats for me. Thanks Stan! — 9 days ago
Tasted blind. Medium yellow gold color, great weight in the glass. Notes of lemon, white flower, peach, some honey and a little dirty wet stone. Very rich in the mouth. Power and acidity. Later in the evening this slowed down a bit but this was in great shape and gave the 90 Rav Clos next to it a formidable challenge. Guessed 90 Dauvissat Preuses. — 9 days ago
Tasted blind. Dark gold color. Heavy like motor oil in the glass. Sweet nose. Notes of apricot and spice. High-pitched, more so than a Sauternes. Guessed 70's German. — 9 days ago
Tasted blind. Deep tawny color with clear amber rims. Has "the funk" in the nose - an old aged Bordeaux funk. Notes of red and black fruit, some spice, some old desk wood and a little smoked meat. Very refined in the mouth. Feminine. Has a nice core of fruit, with softened tannins. Silky. As a group we distilled this down to Margaux. Guessed 55 Margaux. — 9 days ago
Tasted blind. Light gold color, youthful and heavy in the glass. Notes of citrus, white clay, sea shells, wet river stone, kiwi and some honey. High pitched. Massive fruit and structure. This powered along all night and never slowed down. Easy to guess as the 90 Raveneau Clos as we've had this many times. A debate ensued about what is a perfect white burgundy and where this sits... it would be really hard to get better than this, IMO. Spectacular. — 9 days ago
Decided to check in on this. Deep dark purple, opaque. Fruit intensive nose. Notes of peppery kirsch, some wood and herbs, and a little soil. One dimensional and still primary, even on day 2. Rich and powerful in the mouth. A bit hot too. Just short of age 20, I’m not sure where it’s going. Probably could say that about many 03s right now. I wanted to like it more but it didn’t move the needle that much. Gave it a lot of air and it didn’t budge. Might check in again on this in 10 years. — 10 days ago
Tasted blind. Deep purple color. Looks very young, compared to the 45 Margaux next to it. Almost opaque. Notes of black fruit, cracked walnuts, sweet fruit, raspberry and some cedar desk. Super rich in the mouth. Seems young and is firm, but tannins are softened and the mouthfeel is velvet touch. Long finish. It peacocks all night. The walnuts thing leads my guess to Latour, but can this be the 45? Is it a 61 or 82? Could be... I go with it being a 59 given how young it seems. Just an amazing bottle of wine, open for ~9 hours by the time we left, it seemed to effortlessly power along. Thanks Stan! — 9 days ago
Tasted blind. Amber tawny color, thin in the glass. Notes of cola, sweet fruit, mocha, some dusty earth and a little Swisher Sweet cigar. Light and dancing in the glass. While the fruit is a bit faded, this has that light acidity and decent structure that delivers great balance for what's left in this wine. Hung in there during the night but it was no match for the 71 Vogue Musigny next to it. Guessed mid-60's Musigny. — 9 days ago
Tasted blind, from magnum. Bright amber-tinged flamingo color. At first, an oxidative nose. But over the night, this showed notes of orange marmalade, rose water, quince, light honey and some caramel. Lots of energy in the glass still. This powered through the night and a last glass before departing showed this wine has a lot to give. Guessed 76 Dom Rose. — 9 days ago
