2016 vintage. Domaine Vallot, Vinsobres. Old vine blend of Syrah and Grenache at 300-350 meters altitude in front of the Mont Ventoux. Biodynamically farmed. This estate was consulted by the late Christian Prud'homme. Intense perfume of black cherry jam and dried herbs. Powerful with layers of jammy fruit, balanced by fresh acidity. Long finish. Impressive. — 3 days ago
Star bright gold. Abundant nose of baked quince and lanolin. Medium bodied palate echoes the nose adding layers of white flowers and rock (not stone) with a flash of white pepper on the medium long finish. Medium plus acidity. A classic white from Le Sud-Ouest that’s ready for rich Basque and Castelnaudary fare as well as hearty American white wine dishes. And if you’re the type that “doesn’t drink red,” this is a white you can take to the steakhouse (when it’s fully safe to go). Drink now through 2023. — 4 hours ago
Atypical St. Joseph from Hirotake Ooka. Savage, high toned florals with fruits more in the red and blue spectrum, higher acid and less extraction than typical. Threw off sediment; needs decanting. Quite a bit of va but it works with the strong rose petal and sappy, brambly qualities apparent on the nose and palate. Some clove and a subtle hint of meat char. Similar to Souhaut, more floral than savory, though missing that classical balance. Far out on the natural side of the spectrum; but pretty. — 2 days ago
Pale gold with minuscule bubbles and lush creaminess. The nose is a bit closed in at first but blossoms over time showcasing delicate white flowers, pears, and really nice apples. After more time passes, the nose begins to evolve with more than of smokiness and pepper. Lemons, limes, and strawberry and it ends with an intoxicating bit of honey. 3/4 Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay.
A grower from the Cotes Des Bar with very small production but insanely high quality. The terroir of Aube real speaks here and the low dosage of 4 g/l allows for that expression. Based of the 2017 vintage and disgorged in early 2020. It feels so youthful in the mouth and you just know this has many years to go.
Wonderfully harmonious despite the youthful nature of this champagne, it all comes together in the mouth. Crisp and round, the acidity is pleasingly bracing. More pears and honeyed apples all over this. Citrus fruits steal the show but the chalky minerality and savory notes are showstoppers as well. A beautiful champagne, one you won’t want to stop drinking. Stock up. — 10 days ago
It’s always the last bottle that seems to be the best. This is a gamay and Pinot Noir blend from a producer that makes incredible Burgundy like Chardonnay. Red fruits, acid medium plus, underbrush & wild berries on nose. With the age much tartness has been replaced by depth. Somehow has a stateliness about it- nothing rustic here. Just yum. — 3 days ago
100% Sémillon from Bergerac, of ‘Cyrano de’ fame. Very fresh Loire-style rendition. Medium-bodied with pecan, bread, apple with nice acid. Grapes are organic - hand-picked and pressed into stainless steel on the lees . Unfined, unfiltered and no added sulfur. 12% abv. I did not see a vintage but I believe this is a 2018. — 15 days ago
Normally I would never describe a white wine as being chewy, but this wine is chewy. It’s got some lovely velvety tannins from the Semillon. And the Sauvignon Blanc give it sparkle. Meyer lemon and limes on the nose. Vanilla and hint of brown sugar on the front. The medium tannic structure adds an understated solidity to this wine. Grapefruit high notes on the top of the palate and on the finish, with a return of the vanilla as I swallow. This is the setting sun in the glass that Emily Dickinson wrote about. — 4 days ago
Popped and poured, but notes from 1.5 hrs open. On the nose: a glorious, dense, melange of fruit, lees, marzipan, herbs. On the palate: fantastic acidity and density, soft and very fine mousse, ripe grapefruit, laserlike precision, soft bitter herbs..just stunning, but would have been better with oysters.
Day 2: Wow. Soft oxidative notes...complex and yet so drinkable. Utterly fantastic. — 4 days ago
