The 2003 Lafite-Rothschild has an attractive perfumed bouquet with touches of camphor infusing the blackberry and bilberry fruit. There is a mahogany bureau hint. The palate is medium-bodied with a spicy opening. The sharp acidity slightly jars against the sweet candied black fruit, with blood orange and white pepper toward the mocha-tinged finish. It's missing a bit of sustain on the aftertaste, hence my more parsimonious score. It does cohere in the glass, so decanting will help. Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner from ex-château magnum. Fruit to go for eons. Earth, cedar, leather, more dark red fruits, great balance and story here. If you're buying Lafite, this is it.

Touch of Brett is a little distracting but ripe red fruit and integrated dusty tannins make for an interesting wine, all the better when introduced by Baron Eric.

Definitely a little touch of bret in this wine. Not my favorite vintage of this wine but still great complexity, balance and finesse.

The 2003 Lafite that I had the great privilege to taste at a dinner party last week lived up to all the hype. Sinewy, earthy & elegant- I would love to taste this wine again in 5-10 years.
