Elderberry

Anderson Family Vineyard

Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2019

Light garnet color with a slight ruby core. Aromas of red and black berries, violets and mint. Flavors of elderberry, blackberry, roasted nuts and fermented herbs. Long and very earthy finish. Extremely light bodied. Medium acidity and velvety tannins. Solid, but just a bit thin and watery from a textural standpoint. This wine did open up nicely on the second day. Best with food. El Pensador

The Thinker Campo de Borja Garnacha 2020

Classic, pretty Spanish label of abstract art evoking greens and blues of the ocean. Great garnet red color. Smells like mineral water, painter’s tape, rosewood and smoked pork products. Flavors of rosewater & cherries in a rich cheesecake. Or maybe a bit of Red Zinger and rosehip tea with a bit of red grape juice in it. Very floral with elderberry jelly, raspberry sorbet and flower essences all in the mix. For a screw-top cheapie at Grocery Outlet, this is excellent, graceful garnacha. — 2 years ago

Berryessa Gap

Yolo County Malbec 2018

Yet one more vintage of one of my go to Yolo County wine. Color is pretty. Dark red with a hint of rust on the edge of the wine. Smells like books, wet gravel and pomegranate molasses. (& maybe blackstrap molasses too). Flavors of chalk, elderberry/cherry syrup, unlit cigar, and herbs. Something slightly musky here. More of the French than the low cost Argentine style in this. This is a unique and lovely CA wine. All French wine lovers should try it. — 3 years ago

Williams Brothers Brewing Company

Ebulum Elderberry Black Ale

Thus far, my favourite from this fine Scottish brewery. Amazed with how many good beer/ale brewers there are in the UK.

Chocolate, coffee and berry notes.

Berry flavour is present but not overwhelming.

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013

Cute and classy label. Darker color than a lotta pinot noir out there. Aroma is nice. Ripe berries from cool places (say coastlines and mountain tops). That classic cherry cola of Pinot. Flavors are nice and bright. Tincture of medicinal plants (echinacea and\or elderberry), iron in red meat served rare, pie cherry, or even choke cherry. Nice long finish with some of that woods after a forest fire or peat bogs in the sun. It’s a very nice, dry and balanced Pinot with elegance. — 6 years ago

Beerenauslese Riesling

Tangerine honey, grapefruit sugar, with peonies, the most perfect, spun cotton candy, chamomile, pear and apple and almond and hazelnut, chutney, and toast with a nano marmalade containing frozen peaches. The exquisite peach blossom honey, chamomile, sultanas, elderberry, gooseberry, quince, dried starfruit and lime. Incredibly layered in folds of dried and concentrated richness. #riesling #deutschewein #wein #beerenauslese #dessertwine #botrytis — 6 years ago

Recis Spätburgunder 2011

Like a Burgh - no difference. Franken Pinot (FP). Schlepped this all the way from this super remote winery my 2nd bottle. Stumbled onto this wine because Jancis Robinson recommended this (after all she used to be the Sommelier of the Queen of England). Suitcase import. 13.5% world class - really. Roses on the nose. In the glass faint cherries, blackberries, elderberry (just bought a plant we used to make jam), red currants. Back palate hard to define Za'atar (the plant) - Screw Cap (a strange choice for such quality juice). I know this wine is inaccessible for most folks on this website - sorry. But Franken is a very interesting wine region. The soil is by the way limestone - so it is classic for Pinot. I walked the vineyards - very off the beaten path - even for Germany. — 8 months ago

Enderle & Moll

Buntsandstein Pinot Noir 2021

Darker than the Muschelkalk with more weight. The M. is grown on Mussel based limestone. This is grown on red sandstone. Like the one used for the Cathedral in Freiburg. Much more approachable then the M. Dark cherries, turmeric, black tea, elderberry, hint black currant. I don’t know but - i just feel sorry for the many people who never had a chance to try these wines. The Muschelkalk is often limited to 1-2 barrels and the Buntsandstein to 3-4. The Liason their mid level wines are more broadly available and also very good. Will be at the winery in May for a barrel tasting. A ridiculous value for the money if you can find it. — 2 years ago

Domaine Duroche

Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2015

Nose has juiced ripe cherries, wet cedar, roses, dry garden soil and faint strawberry jam.

Palate has bright cherry fruit, elderberry jelly, ripe cranberry, wet leather and faint tobacco notes. Great acidity and long finish.

Decanted 5H, this is in the zone now for sure.

Paired with a local whole chicken, 24H brine, Asian style spice rub, cooked on my grill rotisserie with apple wood chips smoking away for about 75m. Potatoes, onions and root vegetables in the roasting pan beneath to catch all the drippings. Crispy skin on the bird and good smoke flavor/penetration in the meat. A great reward for laboring away in the yard and garden all weekend.

Late Bottled Vintage Unfiltered Porto Port Blend 2014

Black currant, elderberry, and cedar on the nose. Thick, spicy cherry chocolate. Perfectly balanced and dry for an LBV. Very chewy and grippy — making this wine a real treat. — 6 years ago

Enderle

Pinot Noir 2022

See my previous notes. Sven always works at the edge. Excellent and classic Pinot - the way it should be made. Looks light in the glass. But this carries a serious punch some whole cluster, some cherry 🍒 - but mostly other berries…cranberry and elderberry. Chalky and tart - excellent tannin management. If you consider yourself a Pinot expert - this should be on your bucket list. (Sourced by Lyle Fass). — a year ago

Marotti Campi

Superiore Orgiolo Lacrima di Morro d'Alba 2015

Great Thanksgiving wine! Dried cherries, rose petal, gum Arabic, cedar-Saigon cinnamon-oak, elderberry, currant, nutmeg, blueberries. Black pepper on entry softens to black and red cherry with lavender and violet. A touch of cherrywood a smaller touch of applewood, a minute touch of hickory and a nano shaving of mesquite. Laden with inlay. Sour blackberry finish speckled with lingonberries and myrrh.

Suber Nero d'Avola Blend 2018

Yowee this is a vigorous wine! Color is pretty saturated and youthful. Nose she’s intensely zingy dark berry (elderberry and black raspberry), animal notes and decomposing granite like a northern Rhone Syrah. Wild. in the mouth it’s joltingly electric with acidity, but that is balanced by concentrated ripe dark berry fruit. There’s also deep minerality and a note of new baseball glove leather. The tannins are present but we’ll managed. Finish is long and lip-smacking. Really good and really unique. — 3 years ago

Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2018

Smell of ripened sweet plums in an orchard where a strong aromatic herbs are grown along the edge.

Dense and lovely - this wine shows bright, rich fruits, raspberry pie, unsweetened blackberry jam, hints of Provençal herbs with a lip smacking tanginess, and elderberry acidity.

Give me a Skurnik find any day.
Delicious !
