Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

2005: this wine is still a baby with bright red fruit predominating the nose! Really silky and fine. — 7 days ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1966

From back when Mouton was still a Second Growth. Decanted prior to service; enjoyed over the course of several hours. This bottle of the 1966 pours a garnet color with significant rim variation; medium viscosity with light staining and signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated red and black fruits: cassis, blackberries, green pepper, tobacco, leather, old wood, organic earth and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. This was a good showing for the ‘66 and certainly has life left in it however, there’s no need to hold out. Drink now. — a day ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

Came away somewhat disappointed, but upon further reading, likely because I didn’t know the house style. Structure was still kicking for an 01. Nose was beautiful, but wine lacked a richness and body I was hoping for. Austere. Bordeaux clearly has more range and I have more to learn :-). Drank alongside beautiful wagyu in Kyoto — a month ago

R. López de Heredia

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2001

Slightly deeper and brighter colour than the 2004 , younger looking . More ruby with a garnet rim . Really aromatic and floral , violet , mint , spiced red cherry , ripe raspberry , eucalyptus . Still really fresh and fruit driven . Some dried herbs and earthy notes in the background. On the palate this has lovely elegance and poise , with herbal red cherry , strawberry and slightly nutty notes. Quite ripe and juicy , but with fresh acidity and fine tannins . Long and fruit driven on the finish . Still young from now and over the next 10 years . — 16 days ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

Such a deep and youthful colour!! Black fruit, ink, leather, cedar. Still tight and tannic, yet sufficient fruit, freshness and stuffing to go on for another decade…
Remarkable wine.
