My first Amarone was this 2006. 20 years age might just be the sweet spot. Deep, dark, inky garnet with fig, prune, raisin on the nose. Smooth texture, ripe tannins, more dark fruit on the pallet leaning into tertiary notes. Shared in my wine class how the Appassimento method is used to dry the grapes, concentrating the flavors prior to fermentation. This was a treat for all of us. — 5 months ago

The color is remarkable. The florals are just next level. My goodness. Red roses that are almost Nebbiolo like. Bartolo. Stunning spice. Cinnamon. Just slays. This nose is a 10 and that is not in dispute. Under all of the florals and berry. Luscious and pure and has lift and energy but needs to catch up to the nose. Sweet sweet fruit that is mid season cherry. Complex and fresh and the acidity is on point. Needs air. With 7 hours of air this is stunning. Nose is all florals, all early season cherry fruit, and stunning spice. Unreal palate. Magic. Elegant, sweet, deep and just vibrates on its own plane. Such fine tannins. Brilliant. Nose is just so elite. The most stunning florals ever. 10.0. Maybe 11.0. Palate is just insane. 9.9 now. Such sweetness and depth. Silly purity and big velvety and sweet tannins. — a year ago

This vintage must be before Ruffino. Nice medium garnet color. Took half an hour to open up despite the age and continues to get better. That’s nice first leaves earth mature fruits and rustic elegance of old Brunello. Surprisingly fresh texture for a 35 year old. Great with the lasagne for dinner. — 4 years ago

Does not have the energy and the range of the 2010 and the completeness of the 2016. It does not have the magic of Bartolo, the class of Oddero, and the clarity and transparency of Roagna, but if you delight in delicate refinement, there is nothing like Cavalotto. — 5 years ago

2014 is a notoriously difficult vintage in Tuscany, but this showcases the finesses achievable in a challenging season.

The nose shows fresh cherry, red currant, pinecone, violet, and touch of leather and baking spices. Medium-to-full body on the leaner side, the plate is marked by vibrant acidity and refined silky tannins. Hint of sweetness on the long finish.

Pretty similar colour to the Bartolo , medium deep garnet core , slightly less terracotta at the rim. Porcini mushrooms , sous bois , dried meat , really quite complex. On the palate more mineral , but with a strong meaty , porcini mushroom note , then with blueberry , blackberry . Very fine but present tannins , lovely balanced acidity . Long and really refined . With time in the glass shows well , but will improve over the next 5 -8 years and continue on a further 10 at least — 3 years ago

Arpepe is like Valtellina cheat code. Nose is ripe but reigned in and just gorgeous. Stunning ripe mid to late season cherry. Spice, smoke. So elegant and subtle. I know this will unfurl as the night goes on. Insanely pure and complex tar notes. Just so vivid. Beautiful. Palate is stupid wonderful. Sweet, succulent and supple. So fresh. So much energy and preposterous length. My goodness the delicacy here is Bartolo level. Elite roses now on the nose. Overpowering. Sickness. Amazing mouthfeel. Haunting, intense and delicate. Wow. The balance is incredible as is the finesse. Wow. I’m speechless. Maybe best arpepe I’ve ever had. The tannins are just so fine. — 4 years ago

At the peak of its development. The aroma is marvelously alive, brighter than the 2012, maybe missing some bass notes. Does not have the balanced complexities of Bartolo Mascarello’s and Roagna’s but very persuasive as an authentic Barolo. — 5 years ago
