A Sour Beer Co

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2012

These used to be cheap - not any more 40$ for the new vintage this was 26$. Classic and super elegant. A ton of tannins left: 14%. Fermented dark olives. Dark cherries. Way better than the 2013 chianti reserva I popped for our italian dinner club. These are the wines kids should try - but hey our brillant marketing 🤡 priced them out of trying quality nebbiolo so they switch to cocktails and beer! Well done. Will go for 5-10 more years with ease. — 3 months ago

@Pinotman /// Andreas always so good. The single vineyard ones used to be the best high end values in the world imho. Not anymore. Still great though.

Enderle & Moll

Liaison Pinot Noir 2019

Perfect autumn wine. Crisp red apple, kirsch, cranberry, raspberry, wet wood chips and porcini. So transparent in the glass and such a delicate texture (can’t believe the 14.1% ABV🤯 on the label). Watch out: VA starts creeping up and that lovely fragrant bouquet of roses on day 1 starts turning sour and synthetic on day 3. — 5 years ago

Love it when it’s on, but the VA can really be too much.

@Jae Cho Yeah. I mean, I still enjoyed the last glass or two even with the VA (it was below my reject threshold), but it detracted a bit. Not the same wine it was on the first night for sure.

Brasserie de Rochefort

Trappistes Rochefort 10 Quadrupel Ale

All the essentials. Hope these monks blessed the devil out of this! Gorgeous auburn brown that looks as rich as fresh tilled, valley loam. This head don’t quit! Cappuccino foam with variations. Sheeted micro-weave of bubbles in the lacing that part like thick lips, as if to say, ‘ahhh.’ A touch of baked marshmallow-on-yam. Coffee rye, barley grist, malt and grilled meat interplay, twice baked potatoes with bacon, sour cream and chives. Caramel drizzle. Dark honey glazed sourdough toast. Blood orange squeezed onto fondue, baked, mushroom stuffed persimmon. Heady, rustic, decadent nose invites us to a feast. Intense finesse! So multi-layered they had to fold it into the bottle! There is a cognac barrel aspect that has a cedar and oregano intertwined in an aged balsamic depth. Bark-y and chicory but also resembling petite verdot in its unctuous and integral core. Cherrywood and rich, dark maduro tobacco. The list could literally go on forever. Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2001

Somm David T
9.4

From magnum and paired well with three different Tri-tip steaks sources and marinades.

On the nose, sweet & sour, ripe dark cherries, cherries, blackberries, strawberries, some ripe, slightly rustic rhubarb with just a hint of blue fruits. Glycerin, touch of fruit liqueur, vanilla, dry stones, crushed rocks, hints of dry herbs, used leather, saddle-wood, dark rich soils, soft dark spice, underlying white pepper and dark red fresh and slightly withering florals with a touch of violets.

The palate is med and beautiful. The length, structure, tension and balance are at its peak harmony from magnum. Sweet & sour, ripe dark cherries, cherries, blackberries, strawberries, pomegranate, some ripe, slightly rustic rhubarb, burnt orange, with just a hint of blue fruits. Glycerin, touch of fruit liqueur, vanilla, dry river stones, crushed rocks, hints of dry herbs, used leather, saddle-wood, dark rich soils, limestone minerals, dry stems, more presence, soft dark spice, underlying white pepper and dark red fresh and slightly withering florals with a touch of violets and blue flowers. The acidity is waterfall perfect. The rich, ripe, fresh fruit, well balanced finish is simply beauty on steroids.

Photos of, Lopez de Heredia, Vat fermenters that are still in use and somewhere between 100-200 years of age (they repair them as needed to keep them tight), their cooperage and Maria José López de Heredia who now runs the family business.

La Rioja Alta

Gran Reserva 904 Rioja Tempranillo Graciano 2004

90% Tempranillo; 10% Graciano. Red fruited perfume, earthy with medium plus intensity. Palate at 21 years is developed, balanced and soft with fully integrated tannins. Medium weight with declining strength to its inner core. Not near as good on the 2nd night. This aged overnight and finishes a little sour. I was going to give it 94 points but will now give 90 points. — a year ago

The Rare Barrel Soliloquy Golden Sour Beer 2016

This is fantastic! Huge amount of sour on first sips, but the flavors just keep evolving over 30 seconds. Rose and tropical fruit apparent. Definitely finishes with the loveliest touch of orange. One of the best sours I’ve ever had. — 9 years ago

Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga

Fontalloro Toscana Sangiovese 1998

100% Sangiovese
Bricked, orangey red. Still concentrated and opaque. Compact rim. Youthful looking despite its 19 years of age.

The bouquet is the most enticing part of this wine. Grilled sun-dried tomato, slightly stewed fruits but not at all unpleasant, dried prune, mocha, with a hint of animalistic undertone. I can literally smell the aromas all day.

Presence of substantial tannin but integrated, medium high acidity, dry. Sour cherry, red cherry, blackcurrant. Gunpowder. Antique leather. Great mineral character. Finish with a trace of cedar, and spicy new oak.

Absolutely no reason to wait, although it has just approached the peak drinkability and thus can last another solid decade. Paired with Joe's pizza, the best NYC has to offer! 91.

Marqués de Riscal

Reserva Herederos del Marques de Riscal Rioja Tempranillo 2017

Probably one of the first Rioja reservas I tasted, some 30 yrs ago, so I’m rather sentimental about it- still very solid, & for about 16$ a deal. Black cherries, Dark cola & root beer notes. Medium bodied, mod acid. — 4 years ago

For a Rioja Reserva, this is light but certainly not delicate.

Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga

Riserva Rancia Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2006

Wow. Fourteen year-old Chianti that retains the liveliness of youth. Tart plum and sour cherry fruit, but a more sophisticated nose of leather and earth, with subtle floral notes in the background. Sufficient acid and tannic backbone to be an excellent food wine but balanced and quite enjoyable on its own. Enjoyed the 2006 vintage with a heaping plate of freshly baked ciabatta, Taleggio, Gorgonzola, cherries and dates. I am so glad there is a second bottle of this in my wine fridge. — 6 years ago

The Rare Barrel

Sourtooth Tiger Golden Sour Beer 2016

This did not age well for me. A 2016 opened in 2019. Insanely sour. Definitely ginger but it became a little much on both fronts for me. I’d be interested to try again at the brewery if when they have vintage pours. — 7 years ago

Brouwerij van Hoegaarden

Original Belgian Wheat Beer

An early Christmas gift to myself.

Thick 2 finger head that disapates quickly, a cloudy wheat ale with a slight orange and coriander flavor. A touch of yeast added to the
bottle to ferment during shipping adds some carbonation.

To top it off, the brewery glass is said to enhance aromas..

Product of Belgium, 4.9% alc./vol.
