Château du Retout

Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Ken Z

Drank 10\20\20. Nice with Lamb Kebabs.

Reidel vs Zalto Bordeaux glass tasting.

Reidel Vinum (approx $15\stem)

Graphite, black fruit, and earthy scents. Plum, black cherry, and earth flavors are backed by medium tannins. More red and black cherry, with a bit of oak on the finish.
3\21\8\4\3 +50 =89 pts.

Zalto Bordeaux Glass (approx $60\stem)

Nose a bit more floral, with violets, plum, and graphite. Plums, blackcherry, red cherry, oak, and earth on the palate. Seems to have a bit more lift. Finish similar to the Reidel.

3\21\8\4\3+50 = 89 pts.

Same score, but perhaps slightly preferable from the Zalto, and easier to pick out individual notes. Reidel seems a bit heavier. This wine was better a couple of years ago, and seemed to fade a bit after a couple of hours as well. Drink now.

Château Fontesteau

Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Restrained and tight fisted. Very old school Bordeaux. Recommended as a good example of the style and vintage thought not a super star. — 12 days ago

Château Cantemerle

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

A beautiful, cool early Autumn evening, relaxing by a fire in the chiminea.

Grilled raspberry, mashed black cherry, charred cedar, dry garden soil, old forgotten pipe tobacco.

Château Reysson

Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. Dourthe managed this estate for the Japanese owners (Mercian) since 2001 and finally bought it in 2014. The soils are somewhat atypical for the Médoc, with a lot of clay, which explains why Reysson has probably the highest Merlot content (92%) on the left bank. Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. Another great Bordeaux value. Black cherries and very subtle oak. Round and balanced, with the high (abv. 14,5 %) alcohol well-integrated. Soft tannic structure and good length. — 14 days ago

Château Paloumey

Château Paloumey 2015

2018 vintage. Located in Ludon, with famous neighbours La Lagune and Cantemerle. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (42%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). A bit timid on the nose, the fruit hidden by cedar wood and a hint of coffee. Medium-bodied with bright cassis fruit and impeccable freshness. Needs time to balance out the oak, but everything is in place. A little patience required, but another fine Bordeaux value at 14 euros. — 19 days ago

Update / Edit : 2 hrs later. This just needed time to open up, and is now actually pretty amazing. Lots of balance, dark fruits and time.

Original: 2007 Bordeaux drinking now in late 2020. 13 years hidden in the cellar was probably a bit too much aging. It's past prime, and tough to tell what it started with. All that's left is a bit of oak cherry and leather

Château Caronne Ste. Gemme

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

A textbook claret from an obviously excellent vintage, the Caronne Ste. Gemme is a commendable, age worthy wine in fine form today at eleven years of age. It has the ripe fruit of the vintage and an all round harmonious, textbook Médoc profile with rich cassis, blackberry, dark cocoa and coffee bean alongside a slight hint of bell pepper and a tarry note on the finish. Tannins are still very firm, acidity too, suggesting this will drink well on its twentieth birthday. It perhaps lacks the ‘wow’ factor of its peers, but it represents terrific value at the Cru Bourgeois level - as this estate so often does - and should not be overlooked. — a month ago
