Dunn Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

Flight #2 of our 1997 Retrospective and these were the thoroughbreds. Presented single-blind; no formal notes. Wine #3 had great color and was charming on the nose. Developing, the fruit was beginning to show a slightly more desiccated profile. Relative to the others in the flight, this seems a bit more like a fastball right down the middle of the plate. I called Dunn Napa. A really nice wine that was just a little less interesting relative to the others in the flight. Drink now and through 2030. — 20 days ago

Howell Mountain Petite Sirah 1995

Wild blueberries and blackberries and some funk. Had a gnarly bite to it that threw me. Probably needed more air time. Cool wine to try — 6 months ago

Boer Vineyard Chalone Pinot Noir 2012

Six Pinots, all made by Ed Kurtzman, of August West and Roar fame who also consults to Freeman and Mansfield Dunn. Ed joined our tasting. Whole cluster, seemed a bit too steamy for my palate. — 3 years ago

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Rim to rim color density. Red and black cherries poke through cedar and sweet tobacco on the nose with dark chocolate chunks, plum, prune and date, toasted sesame, cinnamon, rose petal, and cardamom. Chewy tannins that roll satin-smooth initially, then cassis, black currant and licorice flip the script. Graphite and blackberry frame dark chocolate and mocha-tobacco, oak and black bread.

Vieilles Vignes Madiran Tannat 1990

Rich dark and red fruits, still some evident firm, tannic structure (but I guess cellaring Madiran is like cellaring Dunn Howell Mountain, as life may not be long enough for them to shed their tannins? LOL), long, lingering firm finish, really quite fine!! — a year ago

I have 2016 in the cellar that I could bequeath to my descendants. 😂

I love that stubborness - it will not go away, I presume.

Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Mr Dunn has another hit! I’m a red fanatic with no shame. But it truly compliments the strong Long Shadows Collection with it’s intense starting notes and light finish. — 6 months ago
