Dark purple with a thin rim and very pretty cherry red flecks. The nose on this beauty is just insanity. A core of black fruit punctuated by beautiful, beautiful dirt. A good bit of menthol smoke and unsmoked cigars. The fruit can be a bit shy at first but a blast of cherry and raspberry wakes you up. And there’s some funk here too. Beautiful, sexy, funky funk. Not too much, just enough to titillate.
Peloursin is a rare rare varietal to find out here in the wild. Think grapes like Petite Sirah or maybe Bonarda. Medium bodied and slightly intense but not too sharp. Always wonderful Howell Mountain fruit in the masterful hands of Mike Dunn and it shows. Low, low alcohol at 13.0 and that is so very nice. Needs plenty of time in the decanter. Wonderful acid and terrific balance and weight here. The notes in the mouth are reminiscent of the notes in the nose with some glorious cherry essence and forest floor. A most peculiar wine but a great one. I struggle to really think of a good comparison for it. It’s just really so damn good and that’s all that matters. — 6 months ago
