Vespolina

Tenuta Monolo

Riserva Bramaterra Nebbiolo Blend 1989

Last of my bottles & a bit sad to see it go- these were soulful wines, demanding not just in managing & extracting their corks but in leaning in to taste what they have to say. After a double decant & cheesecloth/strainer, tasted over 2 days, using a half bottle for day 2. What I loved was the wholeness & evocativeness of the wine, with all the parts having melded; fairly closed on nose but by day 2 old forest floor, rose hips, & black tea leaves; on palate all that & rose petals, dried cherries. The drinking window is closing as previous Delectable users have noted, but what a cool sunset. — a month ago

What was the blend?

Good question: a previous Delectable review said 60% Nebbiolo / 20% Croatina / 10% Vespolina / 10% Uva Rara but I think that’s the portion of grapes planted in the vineyard, not the wine. But I’ll stick with those proportions!!@Joshua Fisher !bb

Boca Nebbiolo Blend 2017

Interesting wine. This one is a blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina grapes. Not every surrounding region allow Vespolina, but Boca does.

The nose is muted. Not showing much. Macerated dark fruits, sandstone & black turned earth.

The body is mucher thicker from the extraction & Vespolina. Medium plus, fine, dark, polished tannins. It shows grapy, dark cherries, blackberries, a plum/raspberry blend, poached strawberries with lift of blueberries hues as it sets. Dark spice w/ some heat, dry soils, dark, muddy earth with clay, dry stones, dry tobacco, leather, dry wood plank, dry herbs, with red flowers with red & pink roses, round acidy with a well made, structured, nicely tensioned, polish finish that land on dry, fine tannins and stones.

This will require 8-10 plus years to flush out.

Sizzano Nebbiolo Vespolina 2018

Lighter neb, cherries and violets, really enjoyable. Reminds me of some of the wines in the old days when they called it spanna. I really like the more northern Nebbiolo wines better than the regions further south — 7 months ago

Mimmo Vino Rosso Nebbiolo Blend 2020

70% Nebbiolo, 30% croatina, 5% vespolina. Some gritty tannins, cherry/ strawberry fruit, pepper, little bit of funk. Really delicious, though I bet a year or two would integrate the tannins. — a month ago

Cantine del Castello Conti

Boca Nebbiolo Blend 2015

Old-school Italian wine that is perfect for pizza. Somewhat thin and alcoholic but typical of wines served in Italian restaurants in Brooklyn when I was small. Flavorful and a perfect match to the marinara sauce of New York Patsy’s Pizzeria or Joe & Pat’s. — 5 months ago

Orbello Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo Blend 2022

A love letter to what an every day drinking Alto Piemonte red can be — feather light, high toned, floral, spiced (star anise), earthy and fragrant. All the pomegranates. Finished the trip where we started. — a year ago

What do they blend with the Nebbiolo ?
Adriana Fabbro

@Joshua Fisher looked it up and actually much lower in Nebbiolo than I thought (only ~50%). The rest is a blend of barbera, Croatina, vespolina with a touch of cab!
