Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Le Petit Haut Lafitte Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

Medium ruby , touch of pink on the rim . Quite expressive dark fruits , cassis , blackberry , touch of spice and coffee , smoky soy sauce and tobacco. On the palate nice cool dark cassis and spicy blackcurrant , with fresh acidity and a saline mineral depth . Fine but noticeable tannins , well balanced and decent length. Drinking well now with a bit of time in the glass or in decanter . Now and over the next 7-10 years . A really good and enjoyable example of a second wine from a vintage that the more I try the more I like . — 4 months ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

Bit if development, quite wide ruby garnet rim . Nicely open and ready to go , cigar box , ripe cassis , touch of soy , cedar , Asian spices . On the palate quite strict and serious , dark cassis , soy , grafite , spicy touches . Good length and still pretty grippy tannin . Very nice now , in a good place though will stay on this plateau for a while , drink over the next 10 years . — a year ago

Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2019

Perhaps the best young Châteauneuf-du-Pape that I’ve ever tasted, this extraordinary wine has power, but also elegance; purity, but also enormity; sweetness, but also umami. The aromas are classic for the appellation, with sweet blue fruit, Turkish delight, soy, coffee, heady garrigue and smoked bacon. But it’s the palate that steals the show, gobsmackingly gorgeous, with enormous presence and a near-perfect harmony between intense, dark, sweet fruit from the century-old Grenache, and bitter coffee, orange peel and a thousand other flavours that carry through to the finish. Super strong tannins at the moment; this wine will age superbly. The finish is incredibly long. They only make one cuvée each of red and white at Vieux Donjon - no high end bottling - and it shows in the incredible quality of this wine, which is up there with the very best. — 7 months ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

La Tâche Pinot Noir 1988

Tasted blind. Dark tawny color. Sweet, candied fruit nose with notes of dark raspberries, some spice, some mocha, some gravel stone and a little soy sauce. In the mouth, there is a dryness to it when compared to the great nose and smells this gives off. Very masculine. Punches you in the face. Guessed 89 Rousseau Clos de Beze. Great juice! — 2 years ago

Manchuela Syrah Blend 2009

Really cool stuff...nose of maturing Syrah, currant jam, cedar. Inky with minimal rim gradation. Palate is fruit/tannin up front with northern Rhone gentility on the end. Soy sauce, roasted meat, iron, leather. We last had this four years ago and it’s still going strong. Worth tracking down. — 3 years ago

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1978

Not clear appearance , medium bricking garnet core and browning rim . Quite a lot of tobacco and slightly green spicy notes , cassis, decayed red fruits , soy sauce meatiness. On the palate medium bodied with good acidity still , rounded tannin , slightly hollow palate but still notes of cedar , tobacco and sous bois, red floral notes also. Ok balanced finish , quite enjoyable still and actually fills out with a bit of time in the glass . Commendable , probably past best but still provides enjoyment . Drink now . — a year ago

Stella di Campalto Podere San Giuseppe

Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

From nearly purple and dense in the middle to slightly orange brim surrounding the surface.
Nose as classic as it gets
Dark cherry, leather, truffle, licorice and.. soy sauce..and coffee..and if you keep swirling you get more and it isn't that classic anymore
The palate is full and in great tension
So fresh and vibrant
Almost whips you mouth
Majestic example of sangiovese that you can easily still put aside for a while, but absolutely enjoy now too
Very long
Decanting would be very beneficial
