Sleepy Time Gal

Domaine Juliette Avril

Mailys Cairanne Red Rhone Blend 2020

This is a fruity, refreshing little gal. Raspberry, cranberry, vanilla, herbs, violet. Very acidic with soft tannins. Take her to dinner and she'll love you long time.

Château Gruaud Larose

Sarget de Gruaud Larose Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

60 CS, 30 M, 5.5 CF, 3 PV, 1.5 Malbec

Dark and brooding, semi transparent, still youthful.

Restrained bouquet at first but after 1 hour of thorough decanting, it decided to wake up. Cassis, toasted cedar wood, lovely tobacco and tea leaf undertone.

The palate gives away quite good amount of tannin remaining. Nice balance of acidity. More dark than red fruit. A lot of secondary characters start to come out. Finish strongly on the cedary/woodsy note.

For a second wine in a heralded vintage (i.e. usually not good), this is a success. Has staying power to keep going for 5 more years easily. If pop now, need a long decanting time. It's in that very sleepy phase. 90+

Gál Tibor

Superior Pinot Noir

Gal Tibor pinot noir superior. Single vineyard "Grober". This is a superb pinot noir that desperately needs to be opened ahead of time. A big, bold and serious wine that has so much going on both in the glass, the nose and mouth. Not an everyday wine and wasn't meant to be soft and subtle - it wants to hit you hard and make you really think about what you are discovering over time in the glass. This amazing and rough wine is going to be something to look forward to as it ages. — 10 years ago

Domaine Huet

Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec Vouvray Chenin Blanc 1985

WOW. This is a reason to age wine. This was a birth year wine for me. This gal has just turned 31 and still knows how to have a classy time. Hazelnut. Macadamia nut. Fresh ground coffee beans. Unbelievable wine. Just a touch of sweetness on the tip of your tongue. Proud to be born in 1985. I don't want to finish this glass. Damn. — 10 years ago

Love me some Forrest Wines 'The Doctors' Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc this time year!
Instead of reaching for those sleepy time, high octane reds, why not something fresh & crunchy reminiscent of dewy green grass, freshly sliced cantaloupe & perfectly ripened kiwi? At only 9%, and $18, I'm in!

I tried this for the first time at Keepsake and loved it. Typically I am a dry dry dry wine and cider gal. But this is sweet and juicy and funky and perfect.

We adore the nose on this one, just like freshly proofing bread every time. The blend is 80% Pinot Meunier, 15% Chardonnay with 5% Pinot Noir. (Lot DB050314)

As the bottle warms a cooked/toasty pear note really starts showing. On the palate there is fig, dried ginger and dried lemon zest with honeyed pear. This wine evolves tremendously as it warms, when you can't reach the slightly chilled bottle for a refill because you have a sleepy kitten on your lap.

Just like driving over the middle of the yellow lines in the street, this one is evenly on both sides. It's a JD Headrick wine, I don't like all his imports, but this is a major fav.

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2010

I'm sorry I woke you up but I need to check in on you and your friends. Day 1 is compact and very concentrated. Vinous and dense. Just needs some time to wake up. Already tons of garrigue, tar, talcum, licorice and dense fruit out the ass. Super silky given it's weight. Day 2: still sleepy. Showing some more black fruit compote, black tea, raspy herbs, bitter cocoa, cedar. Day 3: this big boy is just waking up. Relaxed a lot though since the last 2 glasses went down very quickly. 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault etc — 10 years ago

As you see the cork is perfect. I've had this in my cellar for years and decided it was time. At first he nose had a cork smell but now after being open for 4 hours it's a different wine. Pear, apricot, nectarine, and good acid. Not like I'm ever going to have anymore of this so #fugetaboutit — 11 years ago

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Cru Classe des Graves Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

2000 vintage. Great fill. Awesome cork. Decanted and tasted after 45 mins and 4 hours. Some sed but not as much as expected. Plenty of sleepy time funk for the first 10 minutes in the decanter. Then, things started to unlock. Medium body. A little bit of everything: spice, richness, tannins, concentration, softness, fruit, earth tones. Phenomenal now and may not improve but wagering that another 3-10 years might just find this at the absolute zenith of the bell curve. There's a reason why this estate is one of my two fave BDX estates. 2.15.24. — 3 years ago

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1959

Tasted blind, from magnum. Old dark ruby color. Amber rims. Notes of black cherry, spice, earth and something like pencil lead. Ok in the mouth, refined, but lacking energy. With the meal this was enjoyable but was somewhat sleepy all night. Likely at peak and given the magnum format, it's time to drink up 750s. Guessed 62 Latour. — 9 years ago

Domaine Alain Chavy

Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay 2013

As I learn about some of these better White Burgundies, the element or really more a "consistent trait" is a simple joy that flows onto the palate that's like a warm smile from the right gal at the big party. Nothing at all sinister- just that warm welcome that promises to bring a good time along with it. The nose seems right in step with the aforementioned grin, with notes of nougat, golden-hued wrapped in a subtle, near-neutral bit of barrel. As it has breathed it's shifted into a more "relaxed gear", and is spreading out, revealing more of itself. Reaching the back of the palate and leisurely 'becoming' a finish it reflects the best bits of its strengths on the mid-palate.

Powerful petrol, slate, and white peach and baked apple aromas with hints of cinnamon, cloves that yield to luxurious tastes of apple cider, white cranberries, and guava nectar. Also smells like the checkout gal at Total Wine who wore too much perfume and transferred her Versace onto the outside of my bottle.

With time to breathe, reveals bouquet of French milled soap and wild roses.

Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux

Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2010

Fresh out of the bottle is very closed up and austere. Everything needs to be coaxed out of it. I would give it an 8.5 now. Needs more sleepy time :)

After 2 hours past decanting, the promise starts to show. Beautiful fruit and delicate tannins.
Nevertheless needs a long sleep before it's ready to show all it can be
