Old Grand Dad

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1989

+2 hour decant(decent chunky/fine sediment). A wondrous dark garnet with bricking. On the nose: perfumed notes of stewed plum, currants, old leather, cigar box, smoked meat, truffles, and touch of mint. Taste: silky, exquisite wine with red cherry/plum, old leather, dusty chiseled granite, bitter chocolate, cedar, and a dry graphite/coffee long finish. YUM! Drinks beautifully and should hold for more years of awesomeness. — 24 days ago

Nice bottle!

Chateau Grand Traverse

Dry Riesling 2020

Classic dry Riesling, hints of petroleum, lemony citrus and minerals. Aftertaste lingers. Around here it’s hard to find dry Riesling which is always a pleasure to discover a good one. — 5 months ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

#AgedWineTuesday

Dark ruby in color with a wide brick rim

Earthy nose with light oak, black fruits and tobacco.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with red and black fruits, wood, earth, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf, dark coffee, licorice, dark chocolates, black tea and black pepper.

Medium plus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 35 year old is still drinking beautifully. This Second Growth Bordeaux is nicely balanced and complex.

Peaking now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next 10+ years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 4 hours. I did not decant it, but let it open up in the bottle.

Wine Spectator 96 points.

A good food wine that I paired with beef brisket. Gorgeous.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$275.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2013 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a pronounced, minty bouquet with plenty of fruit. However, it lacks the bandwidth of a truly great Musigny from de Vogüé. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, briny with black olives infusing the black fruits, linear and structured toward the finish. Fine, but very serious. Like an old schoolmate who you've never heard crack a joke. (Neal Martin, Vinous, October 2023)

Domaine Michel Niellon

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 1990

Medium gold color. Notes of stones and dirty rocks, lemon and citrus, a little mint. Very rich in the mouth. Powerful. Got better as the night went on. Was easy to pick the vigneron and vineyard but guessed this as the 93. So powerful and complex. When old Niellon is “on”, there is not much better of an experience. — a year ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

Lots of eucalyptus at opening. 15 mins in it begins to settle in. Leather, mushroom on the nose with the ever present eucalyptus. Really well structure fruit on the palette, a tinge of acidity and a bit sharp on the finish. More time in the glass brings a balance that’s amazing for a 39 year old wine. Thankfully no one here to share!

Château Grand Corbin-Despagne

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

I decanted about an hour before dinner but think it would have been fine without doing that. Very smooth with a lot of black fruits and some veg. Had not been getting veg in Cali Cabs but definitely with this wine and not off putting at all. Excellent long finish. Maybe I should think about buying Bordeaux wines again but too costly and I’m too old — 4 months ago

Domaine Dujac

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2009

I will start with I was impatient and didn’t decant and consumed within 2 hours. So I didn’t really give this a fair chance to broaden. It was nonetheless very enjoyable but definitely muted. Lots of earth and depth. Fruit is buried but perhaps if I had been more accommodating it would have emerged more boldly. Solid old world PN. — 8 months ago

Domaine Ponsot

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1972

Fading, but not dead. Still quite brightly coloured with mild bricking. The nose was strong and quite enjoyable, with notes of incense, tomato, dried roses, and suggestions of red fruits. The palate was still showing some nice acidity and velvety texture, but the fruit was just too dried to provide any proper pleasure. To me, it drank like any old red wine that has just passed its peak (if that makes sense). You can definitely sense an underlying strength, so perhaps a bottle with better provenance would have proven profound. — 2 years ago
