Château de Sales

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

This Right Bank Bordeaux is bright Ruby red, from a blend of Merlot (80%), rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Fresh red fruit with cedar spice aromas. On the palate flavors of blackberry and cherry with some cacao and licorice notes, adding oak and mineral tones. Fine tannins, medium finish, good balance with fruit, ending with smoky oak character, drink now on the younger side, no real benefit from long-term aging. — 2 years ago

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Dark garnet robe, nose of blackcurrant and anise, then dark fruits, violettes and spices together with tobacco and tar, pepper. Medium bodied, elegant, long, its opening now but no rush. We liked it a great deal, its a very fine wine. — 2 years ago

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

Sometimes no other wine will do for me than old-style (13% ABV) Bordeaux, and this lovely medium-aged Pauillac absolutely fills the bill, redfruits, structured but not really tannic, great acid balance really lifts the fruit, not a blockbuster, but very fine nonetheless, I could drink a lot of this!! — 6 months ago

Domaine Saint Préfert

Réserve Auguste Favier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

Just rock-solid Châteauneuf, this is exemplary and for me personally my exact sweet-spot in terms of the varied styles from this region. The nose takes a little coaxing, but has a great yin / yang profile of pure, fresh blue fruit, liquorice, violets, and garrigue, versus seared meat, iron and loamy earth. This all puts it square in the middle of the ‘old’ and ‘new’ schools, broadly speaking, and it’s a wine that has the best of both worlds as a result.

The palate is huge, an iron fist in a glove of velvet and so much more, but in no way imbalanced or over-extracted - not overtly alcoholic, at a modest 14%. It spreads out in waves across the palate, ripples which are felt long after the finish. This is clearly a baby now, but it drinks well and will see its 20th birthday in damn fine fettle. Excited to have a case in the cellar.

Decanting not required nor recommended.

Heitz Cellar

Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Crunchy red cherries, red currants, black pepper, smoke, cigar box, mushroom, tea leaves, oregano, red flowers, a mix of baking spices and mints. long finish. high acidity, high levels of fine/smooth tannins. Compared to 2015/2016, 2013's fruit appears more blue - blueberry? more mineraly and chalky on the palate. 3 years in new French oak, 1.5-2 years in bottle. Organic biodynamic: 501 cow horn prep, 508 prep, native yeasts, cover cops - chamomile, muster green, no fertiliser, dry farm mostly with drip irrigation as backup. wine turbines in the vineyard to prevent mildew. — 2 years ago

Cristal Brut Champagne Chardonnay Pinot Noir Blend 2002

Lemon yellow , really quite young looking, very fine persistent perlage. Slightly reticent at first and then very pure confit lemon , buttered toast , pastry , seashells , mineral , chalky notes , very much like a Montrachet with bubbles . In the mouth really intense minerality , so precisely balanced with mouth watering acidity and very long on the palate . Ripe but steely citrus fruits , pastry notes and lots of minerality on the palate . This is really young still , and probably needs more time in all honesty , no crime to drink now but will surely only improve over the next 10 years and last a further 10 to 15 . — 9 months ago

Laurel Glen Vineyard

Counterpoint Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

Just lovely black plummy fruit, some minerality as well, shows very youthful appearance and flavors, like the Bouscasse VV, 12.5% ABV and shows great freshness and no overripeness, long finish, back when I was actively tasting and following CA red wines, I loved the balance of the 1995 vintage, super fine with years to go, bravo to Patrick C!! — a year ago

Those older Laurel Glen/Counterpoint wines are so underrated.

Domaine Méo-Camuzet

Clos du Chapître Fixin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

There were others on the table that fancied this, but it wasn't my favourite. I just found the wood on the nose too distracting, and it seemed to have the least clarity of the lot. Having said, it's still a wine I would drink over a typical Rioja or Bordeaux say. The palate's quite elegant with a mix of red and black berries plus earthy elements, though all a touch blurred. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and tangy acids. Medium finish. Oddly, there was little to no minerality, which this vineyard's supposedly known for. Could be in a dumb phase of cellaring. — 2 years ago

Thanks, I enjoy this bottle, but I can't find it every release in my retail shopping travels. Might be in a closed phase to your comment.

@Severn Goodwin Good to note. Haven’t had this Meo before, but other reviews do seem to have notes I’d be partial to.
