Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Already so lovely, but still so young. Medium ruby red in the glass with long, lusty legs and a wide brim. The nose is exactly what you think a classic Left Bank Bordeaux should be. Cassis, plums, and tobacco immediately upon opening. New leather and oak with just the right amount of earth. Very nice.

Big, powerful, and virile. Amazing balance and purity for a wine so young. Still a bit tannic at times but decanting certainly helps with that. Pretty fruit on the palate with blackberries and cherries. Soft vanilla undertones from start to finish along with licorice and more earth on the tongue.

Very impressive with such depth and such personality. As good as this is today it will be so much better if you can show patience. Put these away and try your best to forget about them and you will be rewarded.

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Opened 6 hours prior and decanted for 3. Could have taken more air for sure - one to try again in a few years. For now this is quite full, deep and purple, would definitely have guessed a new world producer (though someone with old world sensibilities) but the depth of earth and mineral character on the finish does lead you back to Bordeaux and to St Julien specifically. Very enjoyable structure, depth of fruit, and acid. Perfect pairing with a double R ranch strip steak. — 18 days ago

@Pooneet K, I have some older Ducru-Beaucaillou, 1985/1986 (both, I think), and 2-3 MAGNUMS of 1982. I do love these wines when they’re right, but they did have some TCA issues back in the 1980s!!

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Classic left bank Bordeaux. Well integrated rounded tannins leading the march surrounded with dark fruit and that unmistakable lead pencil. Was hoping for a little more layered complexity. — 18 days ago

For my taste, the 97 has peaked. It did open up after a while with mild spices, yet remained very earthy. — 14 days ago

Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru)

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Presented double-blind at Tasting Group. The wine pours a deep purple/garnet color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears and signs of fine sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of cassis, mixed brambles, tobacco, purple flowers, graphite, dry organic earth and fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+.

Initial conclusions: this could be Cabernet Sauvignon (or based blend), Merlot (or based blend) or Tempranillo (or based blend) from France, the United States or Spain. But the oak is French so unlikely to be from Spain and I think this leans more towards its structure so I’m taking this to France. Final conclusion: this is a Cabernet-Sauvignon-based blend from France, from Bordeaux, from the Haut-Medoc, 2015. I’ll take it. Tasty stuff. Drink now through 2049.

Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru)

Duluc de Branaire-Ducru Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged in new French oak, deep Ruby red color, with aromas of red fruits, spice and spice box herbs. On the palate flavors of blackberry, ripe plum, tobacco and cinnamon spice. Fine tannins, long finish, balanced acidity, ending with ripe fruit, spice and earthy mineral character. Wait a few years before Sipping!
