Even though it wasn't a good vintage it was nice. Could taste the age but was still nice.

The oldest wine was the most controversial, the 1981 Ducru-Beaucaillou see-sawed all night as either corked or not corked. My opinion was that it was only slightly corked, or had bad storage issues before I acquired it. The nose had more of an issue than the palate, having a consistent funk that would fluctuate in strength. Intertwined with the funk were some dried red fruits, fall leaves & baking spices. The palate for sure was better than the nose, having very good density - a very solid mid-palate, but it too changed through the night back and forth between a little funky to pretty good. Texturally the tannin was fully resolved into the wine showing an elegant and silky structure reminiscent of Burgundy.

Going downhill fast, perhaps a bad bottle. Vintage is 1981

One of my go to high end wines. Regardless of the vintage the wine seems to press on through. This particular vintage was a cut above.

The 81 Ducru was WOTN in the NYE Birth Year challenge. Wonderful mature BDX aromas.
