High Point Llc

Domaine Pinson Frères

Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2016

10 year old Chablis is getting flinty and smoky. Beeswax, honey, toasted almonds.

Still high acid, but fruit is sort of smoothing out and giving way to more nutty and saline characteristics.

Still mineral driven but edging closer to saline than stoney.

Green orchard fruits are still the backbone in terms of fruit. But way more on the savory side at this point.

Lacking maybe a bit of structural brightness but it is still sleek like a whisper

Long Shadows Vintners

Pedestal Columbia Valley Merlot 2016

It's time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark Inky in color with a reddish/ purplish rim.

Fruity nose of black currants, black plums, cooked cherries, light dried fruits, cedar, light vanilla, herbs, licorice, spices, dark chocolates and light cola notes.

Full bodied and elegant, with medium acidity.

Dry and fruity on the palate with plums, black cherries, black currants, bitter herbs, earth, chocolates, cedar, eucalyptus, tobacco leaf, peppercorn and light vegetables.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a wonderful Merlot from Columbia Valley. Soft and fruit forward. Rich and nicely balanced.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 90 minutes of air time.

This 8 year old Merlot is complex and spicy. Really enjoyed the nose at this point, and the high alcohol is well integrated by now.

Easy drinking and a good sipping wine. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

I had this vintage a few times before, and it is always delicious. I just love Michel Rolland wines.

A blend of 75% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 22 months in French oak barrels (85% new).

14.9% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

Domaine Cecile Tremblay

Les Feusselottes Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

Served blind, I had it as seriously high quality Vosne, like that of CLB. Its perfect prep of a decant for 3 hours and then back into the bottle for 1 hour before serving bypassed the Domaine’s typical smoky reduction and allowed its fruit purity and floral bouquet to take center stage. At this point, it wafts from the glass flaunting a red fruited and fresh violet profile with Vosne-like spices and an elegant, lifted and palate caressing texture. It continued to beautify and expand itself over the course of the night, never shutting down, and showing just how special Madame Tremblay’s wines can be. Chambolle with Vosne flair 👌🏻👌🏻 — 4 years ago

High Contrast Vineyard Syrah 2016

Its been awhile since the funk in the trunk👍🏼
Jeb’s 💯 point review as follows

From a vineyard planted in 2013, the 2016 Syrah High Contrast saw loads of stems and mostly neutral barrels. This thrilling wine has a Chave Hermitage-like purity and class as well as gorgeous notes of cassis, black raspberries, smoked earth, and graphite. It's deep, pure and layered, incredibly layered, pure, and long, with a finish that won't quit. This isn't for those looking for an inky, massive wine, but it’s pure class, complete, amazingly long, and elegant. Give bottles a few years in the cellar and it’s going to shine for 15-20 years.

Its definitely toned down since my first bottle in 2019. My wife might actually try it this time.

2018 vintage. The JS 94 point on the label is certainly far away from my findings. A pleasant fruity Malbec, good VFM. — 5 years ago

Agree, the 94 JS is a stretch, good value wine though.

Château Saint-Jean

Plan de Dieu Côtes du Rhône Villages Red Rhone Blend 2016

Caramel, dark cherry, leather, black pepper, black tea, and menthol. Medium plus alcohol, medium tannins, and high acid. A bit darker than I expected, but smooth and yummy, none-the-less, particularly at the price point. — 6 years ago

Clos Saint Jean

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Reddish in color with medium intensity.

Fresh picked cherries and strawberries on the nose with light chocolates notes.

Medium bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, strawberries, raspberries, chocolates, earth and spices.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and raspberries.

This is a very young Grenache blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Complex and engaging. Nicely balanced and spicy. The high alcohol is well integrated already.

Ripe and fresh tasting at this point, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Easy drinking and good by itself as a sipping wine.

A blend of 75% Grenache and 15% Syrah with some Mourvedre and Cinsault. Aged mostly in concrete vats for 12 months.

16% alcohol by volume.

My high hopes for this vintage were dashed…Not worth the price of entry.
Presents like a $30 bottle. At this point I’ll pivot to an IPA.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Same comments as before. Needs a decant. An hour + in it really softens and opens us nicely. At that point it all comes in balance. Black fruit, high acidity, strong tannins and ease up with air. Drinks well. — 3 years ago

Domaine de la Côte de l'Ange

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2010

La Côte de lAnge is not a top Ch. Neuf de P label. But it is a quality label of of the second tier that represents a good quality to price ratio. One would think that 2010 would be a high point, and maybe it is. But even 2010 is not a superior effort. Very intense, yet undefined, purple fruit and lots of menthol. It’s a pleasant and even intense drink. Nothing wrong. But not the highest expression of the terroir. — 5 years ago

Post House

Penny Black Red Blend 2015

Vintage 2015 | Multi blend from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Chenin Blanc. Lovely effort! I gave the wine 4 hours in decanter and afterwards it had a velvety taste. Good concentration, berries in smell. Paired with Côte de Boeuf from the grill, morels and sweet potato. The only point that I don’t like is high alcohol. With the food the wine gets a nice impression of chocolate and cacao. — 5 years ago

The Prisoner Wine Company

The Prisoner Napa Valley Zinfandel Blend

Floral on the nose. Baking spice and plum on the pallette. Long finish. EXCELLENT with chocolate. So well balanced would never guess the high alcohol level. Would love to try again with steak or lamb. Definitely worth the price point. — 5 years ago

Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011

This is a style I am not familiar with, very high achievement; dense fruit very ripe and candied but somehow preserving lots of savory meaty characteristics. Michel Liger Bel Air once said that Pinot is pure flavor and this is a great excercise in exactly that. I was surprised to see 14.1% abv but this holds it well. Not hot. Balanced yet also over the top. Not into the price point but I also understand people that could really get into this. I could definitely drink it everyday with probably any food too. — 6 years ago

Clos Saint Jean

La Combe des Fous Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Pretty red color with medium intensity.

Fresh red berries on the nose with light milk chocolates.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, red currants, light earth, light wood, spices, coffee, herbs and dark chocolates.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This delicious 3 year old Grenache blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape is starting to drink beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 15 years.

Still young, and from the great 2022 vintage. Showing good potential to become a 94+ point wine.

Rich and fruit forward. Complex with a soft mouthfeel. Soft, pure and elegant.

The high alcohol is very well integrated. Spicy and entertaining. Well structured and precise.

Good by itself as a sipping wine.

Grapes are grown on aged vines of more than 100 years old. A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and 20% Syrah. Aged in mostly concrete vats for 2 years. Syrah is aged in new French oak barrels.

16% alcohol by volume.

Enderle & Moll

Muschelkalk Pinot Noir 2022

Second from right. Beats red burgundies with ease…The 2022’s red and whites might be the best vintage they ever made. The whites are creative and unique - but the reds just floored me. Like a 1er Cru Gevrey Chambertin but better. Much better. Deep dark cherry galore, but also spice and it improved with oxidation over 48 hours, hints of lime, bark, just a touch of pine needles…fantastically framed at this point by high amounts at tannins. Even this mid level wine blowed my socks off. With a sense of place which the chiseled and fine tuned wines in Burgundy have lost. — 2 years ago

Château Belair

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1955

Night two at Bern’s. A backup bottle to replace the 1907 LLC that had a flaw. Went with this choice for its high shoulder fill and great color. Light tawny reddish color. Clear rims with a deep color center in the glass. Fruit forward nose with notes of black and red fruit, some earth and some wood. With air it opened like the others. Decent structure. Good balance. Nice, solid wine for its age but nothing dramatic or exciting. — 3 years ago

Broc Cellars

Eagle Point Ranch Counoise 2018

This reminds me of a Loire Gamay. Gobs of tangy berry fruit leaps out of the glass, with a bit of spice and lots of high-toned cracked stone (almost limestoney) minerality. It’s zingy and bright in the mouth, with lots of bright berries and a bit of spice. Fluid textured with little to no tannin, it’s got zingy acids and a cleansing finish. Very fun to drink. — 5 years ago

Domaine Faury

Saint Joseph Syrah 2017

This is quite a bit more accessible at this point than I expected, even without a decant. The “typicity” factor is very high - olives, some earth, some meat, maybe the slightest hint of some green notes. Excellent acid and medium tannins - nice with pork chops. Delicious. — 5 years ago

This was a nice everyday wine, chose it to eat at home with a meal consisting of pork belly, rice, and bok choy veggies. Specifically for its high acidity and medium body. Not a terribly compelling wine but versatile for its $13 price point. — 6 years ago
