Hen Of The Wood

Gargiulo Vineyards

Frank Wood Ranch Oakville Chardonnay 2022

9.3

Aromatic nose of peach, honeydew, orange blossom, hint of vanilla. Beautiful round acidity. Good weight and texture yet ethereal. Lingering salinity on the palate that I rarely found in Napa chard.
Not for the long haul, but so charming and delicious.

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

2010 vintage. Classic Pauillac with ripe cassis, lead pencil, and cedar wood. Still very young, but a class act. Concentrated, profound, and impeccably balanced, with layers of black fruit, a serious structure of haute couture tannins and balancing acidity. Long, mineral finish. Impressive, but nowhere near its peak. — a month ago

Matthiasson

Red Hen Vineyard Merlot 2015

What a wonderful Napa Merlot from Mathiasson. Quite deep in the glass. Tons of pepper on the palate which is interesting. Lots of dark red fruit - not blackberry, but blackcurrant. Excellent acid and a nice finish. Great pairing with pork chops with a mustard sauce. — 8 months ago

Moss Wood

Moss Wood Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

So much cassis, black currant and rich sweetness. Very atypical for a Margaret River Cabernet - this is more Barossa or McLaren Vale. Less herbaceous than is usual for Margaret River in this warm vintage. A rich medium to full bodied palate with excellent concentration and smooth persistent tannins. My 2nd of 6 and a vintage that will last well beyond 2025 as one well known expert predicted. Should have the next bottle in 2 to 3 years time. 91% Cabernet Sauvignon; 4% Petit Verdot; 4% Cabernet Franc; 1% Merlot. — a month ago

Château L'Evangile

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

The powerful and dense l’Evangile 2015 is according to some experts the last vintage of the classic style of the chateau. I have no experience with more recent vintages, all I can determine is this wine is wonderful. Fairly fragrant. The palate is voluptuous with a creaminess and melted tannins. Ripe fruits, baking spices, black truffle, olives, peppercorns, rock salt, sweet tobacco, noble wood, chocolate, roasted coffee beans. So opulent and so delicious. — 2 months ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2008

A pretty color of ruby, with a wide brick/ reddish rim.

Full bodied and elegant.

Dry on the palate with medium acidity.

Showing red currants, plums, cherries, wood, spices, coffee, dark chocolates, earth, tobacco leaf, herbs and black pepper.

Medium finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 15 year old Rioja Reserva is drinking very nicely now. Showing nice complexity at this point.

Still young and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. A very tasty aged Rioja, and a good food wine.

Robert Parker 95 points.

I Had this vintage a year ago, and it feels pretty much the same.

A blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 5% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano. Aged in used American oak barrels for 6 years.

13% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

#AgedWineTuesday

Dark ruby in color with a wide brick rim

Earthy nose with light oak, black fruits and tobacco.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with red and black fruits, wood, earth, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf, dark coffee, licorice, dark chocolates, black tea and black pepper.

Medium plus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 35 year old is still drinking beautifully. This Second Growth Bordeaux is nicely balanced and complex.

Peaking now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next 10+ years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 4 hours. I did not decant it, but let it open up in the bottle.

Wine Spectator 96 points.

A good food wine that I paired with beef brisket. Gorgeous.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Silky smooth nose, velvety and soft, with forewarned black currants, just a LITTLE pepper, dark cherry and maybe a little pine forest floor? Some sediment and still grippy tannin, but starting to really loosen, with prominent ripe red fruits of dark , brooding plum, cherry and dark fruits, with hints of graphite, wood, and smoke over a still zingy finish. — 4 months ago

Marchesi Antinori

Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2020

First flavors are a splash of cherry and orange. Then a smooth slide to spice, touch of leather and wood. Tight and restrained finish ending with a bright note. — 5 months ago
