I suspect this will always be a slightly intense and powerful wine until it’s not, but I don’t think it’ll then dissemble into something pretty and nuanced. It has big bones and broad flavors. I’d say if you like fresh fruit drink now as it’s impressive. Caveat-I’m not hugely experienced with aging bordeaux. Certainly not from 86

@Conrad Green , great bottles , keep up the good work! I agree with you about the drinking window , it will always be a big , intense wine with so much fruit still, it is still surprisingly young.. I would imagine that its drinking window will be an incredibly long one, with still much pleasure to give over the next decade and beyond .

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1961

Amazing wine, so fresh at 63 yrs that kept developing in the glass with a deep, dark color, notes of berry, currant fruit, cedar, leather, earth, sweet spices, graphite & tobacco — a day ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Medium deep garnet core with slightly wider terracotta rim . Quite exuberant nose , more dark fruits than the Barton , spicy , cedar notes , touch of funk , swimming pool note also . On the palate quite spicy more intense black fruits , cassis , sous bois , coffee , saline , mineral tinged sea spray notes . Balanced acidity and quite rounded but noticeable tannin . Long and denser on the finish than the Barton . Showing well now but can go another 10 years no problem — 24 days ago

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1981

Opened 24 hours prior and decanted for sediment before returning to the bottle; enjoyed over the course of two days. The 1981 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of tart brambles and plums, green bell pepper, tobacco, leather, all of the decomposing earth and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium, mostly integrated tannins with medium+ acid, borderline high. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. Overall, a wine that is a reflection upon the vintage and at 43 years of age, that’s a big compliment. The 1981 is very much alive and will likely live for a very long time. However, it is backward, rustic, and somewhat tough to love unless you’re an old-school masochist. But I’m guilty and this wine is charming despite all of its green character. Drink now and over the next 30 years probably. — 2 months ago

Pontet Canet was underachieving big time in 81. The 82 was great (I bought futures!). And after that it was a gradual climb back to the high quality level that had been lacking in the 70s.

@Tom Casagrande ‘81 was tough but they are still alive to tell the story. Agree that they have been on the ascendency since then.

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

Deep garnet in color and sous bois on the nose. Integrated black fruit, cedar, and graphite on the palette. Absolute and and pure “yuminess” to complement truffle fries in duck fat and a NY strip! — 5 days ago

Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2021

Deep purple , thin pink rim . Quite perfumed , floral , mint , herbaceous character , cassis and blackberry . Quite rich with sweet dark fruits on the palate , plum , cherry , blueberry , blackberry . Balanced acidity and spicy dark fruited finish , slightly meaty , medium length finish . This is needs time in order to round out the tannins , better in 5 years and will last well a further 10-15. — a month ago
