Red Oak Vineyard

Crosby Roamann

Cupiens Videre Lucem Oak Knoll Merlot 2011

A robust deep burgundy in the glass with a shallow rim. Blackberries and luscious dark chocolate explode initially on the nose. After plenty of air she opens up and starts to reveal leather, perfume, and a trace of oak. The floral notes last forever and are exquisite.

Ok, so is this a Cab masquerading as a Merlot like so many other Napa Valley Merlots? Thankfully no. Much softer and lush on the tongue. She’s definitely New World in style and character. There’s a nice sweetness here that never gets out of control, it’s just right. Lovely balance and structure. Nice complexity and gorgeous Oak Knoll fruit.

Smooth and round on entry, tart cherry is all over the palate. Cinnamon and smoked oak compliment well. Fresh herbs and violets steal the show. A testament to Oak Knoll and what Napa Valley Merlot can be. Just a delightful wine.

Modus Operandi Cellars

Boyd Vineyard Oak Knoll Merlot 2013

Pretty rich and intense for a Merlot. A blueberry explosion with undertones of cocoa, plums, and a hint of vanilla. Delicious now but could benefit from a bit more time in the cellar. — 17 days ago

Gonzalez Byass

Ace Kicker Big Bet Blend 2016

This Spanish red blend is medium dark and has a nose that is loaded with red fruit, peppery herbs and smoke. The Tierra de Castilla wine is made from 34% Cabernet Franc, 27% Syrah, 15% Petit Verdot, 12% Tempranillo, 7% Graciano and 5% Garnacha grapes. The fruit forward palate has eight months of oak showing and a firm set of tannins. The flavors are somewhat deep and quite juicy.

Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Beautiful scents of raspberries, vanilla on open. Uncorked are 8am and drank at 8pm and the wine had rounded out beautifully. This is a big boy wine! Berry pie, hint of leather. Plush, long finish. Amazing with prime strip steak at #elche in Chicago — 17 days ago

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Vendemmia d’Artista L' Energia Red Blend 2014

Dark Ruby with aromas of earthy ripe black and red berries with slight note of cacao and woody spice. On the palate flavors of ripe, juicy fruit with oak, tobacco, leather and peppery-spicy tones, dense and persistent, firm tightly wound tannins need to integrate with oak. Long finish, complex ending with juicy sweet fruit and toasty notes. Must mature! — 14 days ago

Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Alder Yarrow
9.5

Aged to perfection. Brimming with cedar and bacon fat aromas, favors of forest floor and smoked meats, dried red apple skin and dashi. Beautiful acidity and a wisp of powdery tannins. Bonny FTW. Drank the rest of this press sample with our steak dinner. Check out my writeup on Bonny’s Vineyard on my web site Vinography.Com. Search for it. — 14 days ago

Perhaps a little past prime, but these two Alexes from the mid 90s are so wonderfully elegant. — 11 days ago

Marqués de Cáceres

Rioja Gran Reserva 2012

A blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo and Graciano, with aging, 50% in new French oak. Deep Ruby with ripe red and black fruit aromas and toasty spice. The palate shows plum and blackberry flavors with smoke, cacao and spice. Vivid acidity, firm ripe tannins, integrated lending to a medium+ finish ending with some earthy notes. Just starting to drink well, a few more years will benefit. Nice value for a Gran Reserva. — 4 days ago
