Word Of Mouth

Trimbach

Clos Ste. Hune Alsace Riesling 1983

WotY finalist. WTF nose of caraway, felt pads, molasses and oregano. Mouth is insane fresh with laser tag structure. More savory Crème brûlée than Riesling. — a month ago

Three previous bottles from different vintages have all been oxed. Never understood the hype. But now I do.

Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2006

2022/5/13 with zukedon, etc. From a half-bottle, bought on release. Bright yellow-gold. On the nose this has developed that honeyed note which only comes from cold northern Chardonnay with some age. There’s also steel and stone. The palate is very intense - it starts with more honey and perhaps some candied citrus peel, but more chalk and steel quickly take prominence. This is a powerfully mineral, dry, salty, alkaline wine - like most 2006s from all over Burgundy, the acidity feels on the low side (though it’s there at the edges of the mouth), and this isn’t about fruit either (with the main fruit note from the mid palate onwards being bitter citrus oils). Bracing, fascinating. — 3 years ago

Les Preuses Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2004

Decanted for 3 hours. Canary gold color. Bright and fresh. Fruit forward nose. Notes of lemon curd, white peach, sea shells, wet river stone and tan spice. Very luscious in the mouth. More fruit than acidity. This went quickly as the team tonight was thirsty. — 3 years ago

Cristal Brut Champagne Chardonnay Pinot Noir Blend 2014

Decanted in the glass for 30 minutes, with bottle open during that time and later. The best wine experience so far. I tried it before on a tasting and was not impressed. Brioche, toast, citrus, apple and racing acidity were still present in my mouth after 2 minutes of taking a sip. I prefer to drink it the way I described at the beginning vs straight from the bottle that was standing in ice. — 4 months ago

Silver Oak

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Wonderful. Ripe blackberries, plums; bark, lots of tannins, still quite a bit of acidity; mouth puckering, delicious. Wouldn’t call it smooth because it’s got more years to go to get even smoother. — 2 years ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1945

Tasted blind. Deep purple color. Looks very young, compared to the 45 Margaux next to it. Almost opaque. Notes of black fruit, cracked walnuts, sweet fruit, raspberry and some cedar desk. Super rich in the mouth. Seems young and is firm, but tannins are softened and the mouthfeel is velvet touch. Long finish. It peacocks all night. The walnuts thing leads my guess to Latour, but can this be the 45? Is it a 61 or 82? Could be... I go with it being a 59 given how young it seems. Just an amazing bottle of wine, open for ~9 hours by the time we left, it seemed to effortlessly power along. Thanks Stan! — 3 years ago

Tenuta San Guido

Guidalberto Toscana Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2016

Had this in cellar! Outstanding! From the makers of Sassicaia, Deep Ruby with red & black fruits and floral aromas of this 60% Cab Sauv 40% Merlot blend. On the palate flavors of cherry, currants and blackberry with cinnamon, licorice, cacao and earthy notes, well integrated. Fine tannins, approachable, a wine with a solid structure, elegant and smooth, long finish, great mouth feel ending with fruit and spicy oak. Still had room to age. Nice! — 3 years ago

Brut Champagne Blend 2004

First night open: 20 year old vintage— chocolate on the nose with a stone fruit finish. Tasted clean and complex with an almost immediate light evaporation in your mouth leaving you with the feeling of bubbles dissolving. Delicious. — 8 months ago

Domaine Coche-Dury (J.F. Coche Dury)

Meursault Chardonnay 2004

Served blind. I nailed the vintage, even a broken clock is right twice a day. A spectacular nose of smoke, flowers and a dose of reduction. In the mouth, intensity and freshness . Minerals & green fruit that reminded me of Chablis to start but no way given the weightlessness. Waves of crisp fruit with exceptional balance. Most producers would be happy to make a premiere cru or grand cru of this quality. It might be an overused descriptor or cliché, but this was all about pureness. According to my friend purchased on release, and locked away. A reminder of how important proper storage is. — 9 months ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

La Tâche Pinot Noir 1988

Tasted blind. Dark tawny color. Sweet, candied fruit nose with notes of dark raspberries, some spice, some mocha, some gravel stone and a little soy sauce. In the mouth, there is a dryness to it when compared to the great nose and smells this gives off. Very masculine. Punches you in the face. Guessed 89 Rousseau Clos de Beze. Great juice! — 3 years ago
