Of course. But the bocksbeutel is not practical for cellaring. I live the story, but it’s even more frustrating than Special Club Champagne

Château d'Esclans

Whispering Angel Côtes de Provence Rosé Blend 2019

Vintage 2019 | hint of orange, stinking smell (positive), high acidity. This needs something to eat because of high bitters, lots of character. Swallow reflex. — 3 years ago

Mortlach

16 Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A not-so-wee dram for my birthday reminds me how Mortlach separates from the herd. Transcendent light-bodied balance yet a finish that goes on in breath long after swallow. A poetic emotional drink. — 2 years ago

Christian Drouin (Domaine Coeur de Lion)

Calvados 1978

Old Calvados from a very good producer… starting to lighten in color. But intense caramel, butterscotch, and ripe red apples on the nose. Silken smooth and a long warming finish. Dangerously easy to slurp and swallow, swirl, slurp and swallow… repeat. Cold winter evening, roaring fire, 2-4 good friends… and all too soon the bottle is history. Note to self.. always have a backup! — 2 years ago

Cantina del Signore

Riserva Borgofranco Gattinara Nebbiolo 2016

Man this is so young. 3-5 years at least from an early peak. But you can see the greatness. Man this is going to be a wine of a lifetime.

Nose is pungent cranberry flowers. An assault on the no trial. Nose petals peeking through. Some lilacs.

Palate is stunningly fresh. So delsignore. You get the amazing Nebbiolo fruit you’d expect from 16 but it’s as fresh as just picked grapes. Bright cherry. A bit of darker red cherry. A hint of licorice. Some cranberry fruit.

A beautiful wine.

On the swallow this is starting to show that “oh my god I can’t believe I’m drinking this” perfect balance of truly great wines.

As this opens piercingly intense. Pure pure pure. A hint of elegant brick like you get in old burgundy. Intense Dried rose petal extract.

Finish is so profound you leave it on the palate for like a minute sucking in air and mumbling “mmmph. Mmmph mmmph” it’s so good you do t want it to stop.

Villa Creek Cellars

Avenger Paso Robles Syrah Blend

Sage and mint and a hint of allspice on the nose. And from what it’s nose nose told me, I was prepared for this wine to be kind of raw. But it has a lovely silky tannic structure that begins on the tip of the tongue and follows through, all the way to the back of the palate, into a very long finish. At first taste this wine feels like a medium- bodied Rhône varietal, but it releases all its complexity and body midway into the swallow. There’s a light taste of cherries on the front, but that’s it for the fruit in this wine. (Fuck fruit. It’s overrated.) Mid palate it displays notes of cola and dark chocolate, and it ends with a lot of high mineral notes (calcaire) at the back of the palate. Did I mention the long finish? You probably don’t want to pair this wine with any sort of food. Otherwise it will hide that delicate finish — that goes on and on and on until it slowly fades away. A beautiful and unique wine. — 4 years ago
