Black Label Sémillon 1979

The label is barely there, but i bought in the James Halliday's collection auction as a Wood Matured Black label 1979.
At this stage I opened a few of these old semillon and I am honestly loving them even though i realise that not everyone would.
Once they get to room temperature the magic happens.
This is complex and fairly fresh, not gone at all.
I smell almond, bruised apples, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, lanolin, coriander. Autumn forest floor and boiled chestnuts. Nougat and marzipan. Peppermint.
It's very long. It's an experience. It talks its own language. I don't think there is anything like it anywhere else. 41yo, nearly my age, but much more interesting than me.

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2018

Holy smokes! This was phenomenal. I knew there was quite a bit of hype with the 2018 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier on release (96-99 points from the usual suspects), but I didn't think it could live up to it. It sure did though, and I'd even go so far to say that this was the best young Shiraz I've had this year, both southern and northern hemisphere included. The perfume was just plain intoxicating - fresh red cherries, plums, violets, and roses, with a lovely touch of savoury spice, pepper and meat. However, that was just the cherry on the cake because the palate really knocked it out of the park. Super fine texture with tannins that are just made of pure silk. There's serious power and persistence here, all delivered in a precise and elegant package. The flavours are pure and delineated, with a long chalky, acid-driven finish that I absolutely adore. Surely a wine that rewards the patient. One for going deep on. — 17 days ago

Margaret Barossa Sémillon 2005

See previous notes - this wonderful old Semillon keeps getting better and better. Mid Lemon in colour. Aromas of Lanolin, beeswax, wet hay, lemongrass and toast. 0n the palate a soapy texture amongst the citrus and honey notes with refreshing bright acidity. Tastes much younger than 15 years and will probably still be giving pleasure on its 20th birthday but sadly for me this is my last bottle. Totally unoaked demonstrating how good Semillon puts on weight with age and doesn’t need oak unless you want to drink it young which misses the point as Murray Tyrell used to often say. A real treat to drink this wine - the following day the citrus was riper with notes of mandarin. Stunning. — 2 days ago

Soljans Estate

Barrique Reserve Pinot Noir 2015

This afternoon I have opened the 2015 Soljans Estate Barrique Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir.

On the nose I am able to get ripe cherry, strawberry jam, cola, ckove, mushroom, some funk, wet leaves and forest floor.

On the palate there is ripe cherry, raspberry, cranberry, plum, clove, mushroom and an earthy component.

This wine is medium bodied with medium acidity and medium sandy tannins with a long earthy finish. I hope everyone's weekend went well and are doing well? We look forward to a wonderful week ahead and as always please stay healthy and safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Hemel en Aarde Valley Chardonnay 2018

i was surprised by how delightful i found this! a beautiful, round mouthfeel, that had a lovely peak of acidity to finish. a touch of oak, notes of ripe pears that gave way to citrus. i really enjoyed this. — 4 days ago

Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Tonights wine I have opened is the 2019 Catherine Marshall Sauvignon Blanc Elgin Valley, South Africa.

The nose has beautiful aromatics with abundance of grapefruit, peach, nectarine, green bell pepper, herbs, grass and minerals.

On the palate the is lime, grapefruit, white peach, bell pepper, basil, jalapeño, grass and minerals.

Grange South Australia Shiraz 1999

Topping the night off with the pinnacle. A Grange from 1999, made during an era that it was still produced in a regular bottle and a reasonable price. It was a mature version of the Saint Henry we had earlier that evening. Extreme dense in flavor, powerful and strong oak vanilla notes. Dark fruit soaked in cigar box and oh so smooth. 21 years old. Don’t take too much time drinking it and don’t decant it. It peaks in about 30-60 minutes. — 12 days ago

Soljans Estate

Sauvignon Blanc 2016

On this Sunday night I have opened the 2016 Soljans Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

On the nose the aromatics are very compelling explosive with notes of lime, papaya, guava, honeydew melon, orange, passionfruit and minerals.

On the palate there are citrus notes, lemon-lime, nectarine, asian pear, melon, white peach and minerals.

This wine is nicely complex that is medium bodied with a oily saline mouthfeel that has medium acidity that moves nicely into a long clean citrus mineral finish. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend staying safe and healthy? We look forward to the week doing the same. Nostrovia! 🥂🥂🥂🥂
