This is a terrific buy in a juicy deep, balanced CDRV. 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Counoise. Very juicy and pure on the nose, nice vibrancy. On the palate, fruit and lots of crushed stone are the primary players. Nice acids, and a little bitterish note livens up the finish. Not complex, but a very satisfying week night dinner pull.

Nose has confectioners sugar over mashed raspberries, wet oak bark, pomegranate juice, quart of fresh black cherries and granite soil.

Palate has thin black raspberry juice, fine metallic notes, dried cherry, softened black cherry, river stones and commercially ground black pepper. Almost no tannins, light acidity, but ridiculously easy to enjoy.

An old non-vintage bottling.
As for the age I would guess this to be somewhere late 60's to early 70's (as the bottle is embossed 4/5 quart which I believe was discontinued for the metric 750ml in 1979) and also has the "classic" plastic/rubber foil found on a lot of oldies from that time.

Being a bit of a history buff when it comes to CA's wine industry I'm very humbled when opening these pieces of history.
Amazingly this held up to 24+ hours of aeration without loosing any life...and actually got better!!

Huge progression from the old worlds that we just pivoted from. Lavish bouquet of opulent fruits and a touch of menthol and bacon fat. Palette is explosive. The winemaker has packed a quart into a pint pot. Palette consists of jam, nutmeg, black olives, toast, and a hint of truffles. Rich Amber color and solid mouth coating of aged Tawny port. This wine was purchased. By Heitz and produced 330 cases. We were fortunate to taste this bit of California history.. — 11 years ago

stunning champagne absolutely brimming and bursting with exuberant ripe classy fruit. It’s got superb density and texture, creamy and layered, but barely able to contain the gorgeous fruit that is just overflowing like a quart of maple syrup in a pint sized bowl. It’s got citrus, stone fruits, yellow grapes, a little ginger, spices, not at all oxidative, so fresh. I made a comment about "high-octane fuel" a little earlier, and based on the aromatics, prototypically, this is it.
Aromas of syrop du cassis, rich black fruits and anise prepare the palette for what is to come. The experience in the mouth does not disappoint. It's plump with a luscious mouthfeel. Not overly done. It's heavily extracted, but still presents harmoniously with bright acidity, tannins that fight back and 14.8% abv. Hints of coffee, jam compote and nutmeg finish with power, yet subtlety.
This is my first taste of their cab, and PM have again jammed a quart into a pint pot.
On a different topic, America, please join the rest of the progressive nations and use the metric system. There, I feel better already.
