Four Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2017

“Four” is a single-vintage blend of the most exciting barrels of Chardonnay from Liquid Farm’s vineyards. Popped and poured; enjoyed with friends over the course of an hour or so. The 2017 pours a striking, intensely bright golden color. I’m not sure I have seen anything quite like it before. It’s nearly neon. On the nose, the wine is redolent ripe and tart tropical fruits: starfruit and pineapple along with lemons, green apple, butter, gentle baking spices (this does see extended time in a small percentage of new oak). On the palate, the wine is dry with what I perceive to be high acid. It’s awesome. Confirming the notes form the nose, the finish is long with good minerality. This is titillating wine that hooks you from sight to nose to palate and it’s the latter that drives it home with the remarkable acid to match the fruit. About as good as any New World Chardonnay I’ve ever had. Drink now through 2039. — 8 days ago

Bollinger

La Grande Année Brut Champagne Blend 1996

From magnum, the 1996 Grande Année pours a brilliant pale gold color with a persistent mousse. Initially, the wine showed more oxidative notes but it freshened up considerably with air (in fact, a tiny amount was leftover for the next morning and it remained brilliant, racy even!). On the nose, notes of almond, citrus, honey, chalky minerals and brioche. On the palate, wine is developing with absolutely brilliant acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and zippy. The 1996 vintage is simply amazing. Here we are, 28 years past vintage and this bright and full of life! Granted, it’s a magnum, but still. Drink now with patience or enjoy through 2046+. — a month ago

More of a summer wine, but drinking great tonight. Also, if you’re a beer lover this wine might be for you. Cloudy, gold/orange color. You can smell the tartness on the nose, and if blindfolded might even think it’s a vibrant red. Sour fruit and wood on the palate. Medium plus depth and finish. Love the uniqueness and complexity!! — 3 months ago

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2005

Deep gold in color. Lower acidity than expected. Lots of white stone fruit and sweetness with some biscuit on the palette. Great complement to Brie. For the vintage and the producer a little underwhelming. — 5 days ago

Cristal Brut Champagne Chardonnay Pinot Noir Blend 2009

Perfect splurge for quick getaway to paradise for Presidents Day. The wine is medium gold in the glass… vibrant and alive with balanced acidity. Open and generous on the palate… smooth, silken, with vibrant citrus and cream notes. A lively and lovely dinner companion at this stage of development. Happy President’s Day, y’all. — 2 months ago

SBC Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2022

Low 13%. They really try to find a balance. Not a burgh but really well made. Lots of fruit mostly blackberry driven. Hint cherry 🍒 and lime. Plenty of tannins. This should last 5 years or so. Has a little bit of a bite to it. Definitely one of the better Pinots out there for a good price (San Diego Wine Co.). — a month ago

San Diego Wine & Beer Co has the best prices in the county unless you can find things at Costco which doesn't have much of a selection.

LF remains one of my all time favorite domestic producers for chard and Pinot. Just now cracking into the ‘20s and happy to report that they are ready to go! — 3 months ago
