Clementine Carter

Larner Grenache

2023: Whole cluster grenache, so more herbaceous and floral than fruity. Soft tannins. Served it slightly chilled with burritos - really fun, crushable wine. — 2 months ago

Cuvée Les Champans Bourgogne Pinot Noir Rosé 2016

Prior notes apply; fruit is lightly fading, but this is still an elegant and sophisticated lady.

Nose has strawberry, roses, cut tangerine, juiced Clementine and dry earth.
Palate is strawberry-tangerine (light), wet minerals, so much finesse, yet light in the mouth, just stunning.

Our final bottle of the vintage.

Sta. Rita Hills Grenache 2015

You would never know this is a Grenache by looking at it. The color of the wine is super light. But the flavor comes alive on the nose and palate. — 6 years ago

Cibonne

Côtes de Provence Tibouren Rosé 2017

Color is light copper, trending more orange-yellow.

Nose has Clementine peel, cold apricot, orange oil, warm strawberries, sea salt and sliced peaches.

Palate has peach, dried orange, dried sage, dry sliced almonds, minor saline notes and orange zest. Long finish, continually evolving, actually just tossed this intro a decanter as I think it will benefit.

Fun wine, can easily understand it's prowess and popularity, it's in the zone for us as well.

Paired with sugar/salt rubbed Cod cooked in the sous vide bath, then topped with sauteed shallots/capers, aside parmesan/panko spring peas. So yum!

Alpi Retiche Rosato 2015

Copper-peach color in our glasses.

Nose has day old orange peel, fresh lemon zest, flaked sea salt and wilted daffodils.

Palate has juiced strawberry and Clementine orange, partially dried cherry, green table grape skin and a lightly chalky finish.

Really singing after about 90m open.

Proof positive that you can't predetermine the quality of a wine by the quality of its label.

DVX Napa Valley Sparkling Blend 2017

A sparkling that’s a Christmas morning tradition. Green apple jolly rancher aroma with a hint of citrus blossom. Upfront that’s a mild key lime note. Mid palate has a tart clementine sweetness. Finishing with a mouth watering tartness. Body has a really soft bubbly texture. Very enjoyable, delicate but juicy and tart. Definitely a favorite. — 6 months ago

Domaine A. et P. de Villaine

Bouzeron Aligoté 2017

Nose has yellow apple peel, pear slice, straw and beach sand.

Palate has tangerine zest, ripe pear, under-ripe yellow peach, cold clementine orange with medium acidity and slightly dry finish.
A nice bottle; not sure if this wants more time, or a couple years past prime...

On the sold out (18K+ patrons) Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our guest Conductor Ken-David Masur is leading a 90th birthday celebration of John Williams. BSO soloists tonight are J. Williams Hudgins (vibraphone) & Jessica Zhou (harp), joined by Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Branford Marsalis (saxophone), Eric Revis (bass) and James Taylor (vocals/guitar). A truly wonderful night lay ahead, and my money is certainly on hearing at least one or two Star Wars movements this evening...

@Doug Powers Because of JW's connection to the BSO, we actually get to see him conduct about 2x per season, minimum. Although last night was all about him not having to conduct, he did lead a movement from Superman and the theme from Indiana Jones during the encore.

Santa Barbara County Grenache 2019

Another amazing wine from Casa Dumetz. Although young it’s already drinkable bright fruit on the palate the wine finishes slightly dry. Of course this is not a typical Grenache — 6 years ago

Barrel X Saar Feinherb Riesling 2018

Wine 10/12 (Riesling)

Nose has tart green apple, Mandarin orange slice, orange zest, under-ripe peach, slate, wet sandstone and over-ripe pear.

Palate has sugared lemon slice, salted green apple, Clementine zest, Tangerine slice with mild acidity, wet slate and slightly dry, long finish. Always a solid wine pretty much each vintage, the benefit of a Saar multi-vineyard blend, balance by portion (blending) control.

Once again it is notable that I have made one full trip around the Sun earlier this week. We had our small, social bubble team to the house for celebrating my getting older and somewhat less flexible in advancing age...Whatever will be done when I creast 50? Well, at least it's several years until needing manage that concern.

We enjoyed well-salted Ribeyes (Kinderhook Farm - Valatie, NY, prepared 48h in advance), turning to a beautiful medium-rare after a mere 12m of grill time and smashed, small red potatoes with capers (yeah try it, don't judge me yet). None of the bottles were particularly planned as 'steak wines'; we didn't care as it really was a wine nerd-fest of grapes/regions, from Burgenland, Austria to Brittany, France. Wine and food were on individual plateaux today. This was the vom Boden Spring Experience case, expertly curated by Stephen Bitterolf, and well received by our tasting crew.

Interesting Rose’ blend of Malbec (60%) and Pinot Noir (40%). Light salmon color. Aromas of tangerine, strawberry, rose petals and wet stones. Flavors of strawberry, clementine juice and minerals. Long and lingering chalky finish. Gripping acidity. Well structured and nice tension. Bright and clean! Appreciate you sharing this one with me, Kase! — 5 months ago

Finger Lakes Dry Gewürztraminer 2017

Nose has amazing Gardenia aromas, sweet honey, freshly milled white pepper and cold wax.

Palate has over-ripe cantaloupe, honey drizzle on green melon, (light) lemon/orange zest and juiced Clementine (faint). Light on the acidity and a bit long on the finish. Decanted 60m. (92-93 points, very nice)

Spectacular pairing to fried eggs (backyard egg factory paying its dues even in the cold of winter) over toasted couscous, softened garlic & red onion, fresh green onion and the star of the dish za'atar (I could eat this on cereal!).

Nose has Creamsicle orange sherbet, dried peach, dried raspberry, dried papaya, orange slices, white flowers and crushed granite in moist soil.

Palate has tangerine gummy bears, honey, fresh Clementine, fresh apricot, white flowers with perfect acidity, long finish, mild sweetness. A great bottle with life in the bottle still remaining!

@Ian Staub I'd say it really depends, all these bottles were under $8 (just), and showed strong on release, which is likely the key. Not everything ends up a winner, we've had much better luck doing this same experiment on inexpensive German Riesling (sub-$15). The '12 & '13 are doing quite well today, so we are happy. You need to be able to appreciate the changes the wines will make, if you are patient and understand where they might go based on your experiences with aged wines, you will do ok to forget about some wines for a while. For my palate, I really appreciate rosé with a couple years age (min), current release stuff is nice but IMO the youthful acidity can cloud the structure. I like acidity, but like palate complexity more and that usually shows with 1-2Y of age on most rosé. There is always an exception, some are built for the long haul though, Cotat, Simone, RLD Heredia, Enderle & Moll, they will hold 8-10+ without concern.

Very cool. I’ve definitely forgotten about sub $20 bottles not normally considered age-worthy and found them to be magical on opening. ... never had the guts to do it intentionally though. Seems like a great way to learn more about bottle evolution in general.
