Chais Saint Bernard

Domaine Bernard Gripa

Parady Saint-Joseph Syrah 2023

9.7

Mineral and granite nose, all stones. Unreal terroir transparency. Edgy and nervy on the palate, yet also elegant, ripe and rich, with serious architecture. Pure, sappy and concentrated, with inner-mouth aromas, juicy depth, and tremendous length. Still very young, almost tannic, with a hint of opulence. So pure. — 9 days ago

Dynamite. Cork broke, but not to worry. The wine is so good. Deep, expressive fruit and bitter leaves. Earthy. Improving considerably as it breathes. And the bottle weighs 37 pounds.

Le Berceau Saint-Joseph Syrah 2013

A truly special site, the average age of the vines used for “Le Berceau” are 60+ but some are approaching a century old. Aging is a mixture of old and new barrique.

Opened prior to dinner; enjoyed over several hours. The 2013 pours a deep garnet/purple with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with classic notes of Syrah: mixed, wild brambles and then it’s like opening up a European deli case: black pepper and Herbes de Provence encrusted salami, olive tapenade, lavender, crushed rock and fine warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Beguiling stuff. Drink now through 2038.

Château Montrose

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

We think something has changed at Montrose after the departure of Jean Bernard Delmas. Its not a bad wine by any means but the style is modern and extracted. At ten years this ie very drinkable and great quality but does not speak to its terroir as it used to. Hope its just one year… — a year ago

The most recent vintage of Montrose I’ve had was the 2000 vintage but I’ve have enough experience with the estate going back to vintages in the 1960’s. If it has changed, that’s borderline criminal.

We have same experience, pretty much all vintages from 1966 to 2009. This 2014 is a good wine but little resemblance to our experience in so many vintages. We hope its a one off, but we dont really know. To your point if they changed, well its criminal indeed...

Domaine du Chalet Pouilly

Saint-Véran Chardonnay 2017

Family owned and operated since 1850, passing down expertise from one generation to another. Today run by Marie-Eve Léger, who joined parents Agnes and Bernard in 2009 after completing her degree. 100% Chardonnay, pale lemon with aromas of ripe stone fruits with biscuit notes. Palate shows apple and peach flavors, vivid acidity, well balanced. Medium+ finish ending with yeasty character. Very Nice! — 7 years ago

Château German Marbuzet

St. Estèphe Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Phenomenal Bordeaux. Great depth of evolving layers of currant, cassis, dark cherry and ..oh so well integrated tannins. Smooth and extremely well balanced. Bernard told us that St Estephe is the feminine side of Pauillac while Saint Julien is the masculine side. This wine supports that notion. Paired extremely well with bbq copper river salmon from Alaska. — 7 years ago

Château Saint-Paul

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. One of the last vintages for this Château, now integrated ( together with Château Bardis) in Château Charmail, when Bernard d'Hallouin sold 66% of Charmail to external investors in 2021, with the aim to recreate "le grand Charmail". Needs a bit of time to open up, better the next day, decanting recommended. Another fine Haut-Médoc value, with ripe fruit, smooth tannin, well-integrated oak and good length. Abv. 14%. There is still some ageing potential here. — 10 months ago

Delicious, gloriously wispy and mineral. Stone fruits, roasted nut, cream - nicely focused and so delicate. There's a nice savory yeastiness, almost sake-like. Picks up steam and fleshes out with air, acid kicks in on the finish. Could age a bit. Just lovely. — 7 years ago
