Bursinel, La Côte

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Clos St. Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir

Mystery achievement, don’t breathe down my neck, no. Excellent fill. 95% saturated cork. Labels a bit yellowed. Decanted and tasted after 15 mins, 45 mins and 1.5 hours. Big, chunky sed. Funk in the immediately decanted nose that blew off after a couple of decanter swirls. A bit of aged color with noticeable meniscus in the glass. Spearmint and orange peel in the nose. Cinnamon and spicy clove kicked in the back door to crash the party. Remarkable concentration in the nose and taste throughout the 1.5 hours. This had a fantastic, 40+ second finish with plenty of viable tannins still maintaining decorum. So yeah, the mystery…the shoulder vintage label was missing and vintage nowhere to be found on the cork, foil or front/back labels. Came from a top-notch cellar. Based on the yellowing of the label, cork saturation, fill, color/meniscus, flavors concentration/structure, initially thinking it to be either a 1978 or 1985 offering. Going with 1978 based on the obvious/large meniscus, amount of sediment, marvelous concentration for the performance and yellowing of the labels. Regardless, arguably the best Burg I’ve had in the last dozen months and def the best 1er Cru. Whatever vintage it was, has another decade-easy-rocking this hard. 3.20.24. — 8 days ago

Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1991

Soft dark fruit. Black cherry, blue fruit, a minerality and iron note gives this a lush brooding midpalate. Super lean and delicious. Time ahead but great now. — 15 days ago

Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2003

A touch of butterscotch on the nose then a deep blue gnarly fruit with a bit of tang and black pepper. Savory and delicious on the palate z quite cool blooded which is ironic given the vintage. Sour cherry notes on the end. — 22 days ago

Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus Grèves Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Brief notes. Showed better than the 2013 vintage we had in December 2021. Quite rich, sweet and fruit driven as well as spicy notes. Tasting more new world in this warm vintage. A good wine without being great. Have the last one in a couple of years ie 2026. — 4 days ago

La Turque Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1990

1990 vintage. Decanted and tasted after one hour. Light-medium body. Great color still. Smoke and earth in the nose. Cedar, spiciness and rusticity on a long finish. Still relevant and kicking. Can hold tight for another 6-7 years. Must be a revelation out of a larger format bottle currently...3.15.24. — 13 days ago

'S' Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut Chardonnay 1996

Really pure and light and lifted. Soft floral notes and a steely spine underpinning it. Long and tense and perfectly balanced with a purity and deftness that is gorgeous. The best 96 I’ve had from them. — 15 days ago

I bought a bunch on release—$200–and love this wine. Guy in NY bought 500 six bottle cases on release—imagine it’s a daily drinker for him. Amazing stuff.

That figures. Good for him. I have a few bottles but it’s always been too tight when I’ve tasted it to think of opening it. It’s singing now though

La Mouline Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1994

Believe it or not, this is my first La-La and what a way to do it with a 1994 no less! Flintstone vitamins, gym socks, pomegranate, purple flowers, minerals like crazy…and what seemed like an impenetrable wall of granite. Tons of baking spices. Modern? Yeah of course but my goodness the quality is indisputable and this worked really well with Iberico pork cheek, mushroom ragu with lavender and thyme. The reality is, even at 30 years old, this is youthful. Drink now through, I dunno, 2044? — 11 days ago

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1970

1970 vintage. Good not great fill. Cork an absolute mess. Decanted and tasted after an hour. Wow. Light body but still going strong. Big spice and orange peel components. Excellent length of finish and obvious class in the glass. 3.5.24. — 23 days ago
