Baby Doll

Dunn Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Cork fell apart but the wine lives! Bought after Tiva’s baby shower, drank with Mr. Eckstein and Dad, the wine is a DEEP dark red, pale brick color to the edges, which needed about an hour or 2 to open up. The nose slowly emerged with ripe red fruits, crunchy ripe plums and cherries, with hints of soil and a little balsamic so far. Full bodied but not HUGE in alcohol, with a loooong palate with great pepper notes, ripe dark fruits, rasberry coulee, dark chocolate and long finish, softened fruits but still good acidity, with tannins just starting to emerge towards the finish and hints of briar and green peppercorn, with slight menthol freshness. This is at its prime right now! — a month ago

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2000

Easily WOTN with a great showing despite slight bottle variation. Fully resolved in all respects, wafting pipe tobacco keeled this baby from nose to back of palate. Bright cherry, tar and tea notes, blackberry and smoke poking through on the entry. Drink ‘em if you got ‘em. — 2 years ago

@LM Segal Interesting to see your comment “Drink ‘em if you got ‘em “. I had a bottle in August 2020 and said I would have my last bottle in the next few years. There was pushback from several tasters that I was drinking them too young and that this was at least a 30 year wine. Jancis had said to 2024. I’ll probably have my next bottle some time later this year. Thanks for the note.

Thanks, Bob. 23 years and there’s bound to be bottle variability…storage, shipping, aeration…to my palate with some air these were at an apogee, but 1 bottle (purchased here in Canada) was a tad more evolved than the other (purchased in CA and shipped 10 yrs ago). They both went to fast to see if they would fall apart but 3 Bordeaux vets at the table all thought they were peaking but not downsloping - yet. Cheers!

Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2021

Referred to as the “Baby Grange,” blend of 53/47 Cab Sauv & Shiraz, aged for 12 months in American oak, partly in previous-vintage Grange casks. Dark Ruby with aromas of fresh black fruits, complex with sweet spice. On the palate flavors of juicy black cherry and blackberry flavors with notes of cacao, oak and toasty spices, from cooler vintage. Well balanced with acidity, full ripe tannins, long ending with smoky spice, fruit well integrated with oak, drink over next 10 years+, will only get better. Nice! — 3 months ago

Oreno Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2015

This Super Tuscan or Bordeaux blend was fantastic. At the 10 year mark its shedding its baby fat and becoming an oppulant wine. Deep red Hue with red fruit and silky tannins. Long Finish. Can't wait to try again — 3 months ago
