Australian Riesling

Petaluma

Hanlin Hill Riesling 2012

When you have a class Clare Valley Riesling there’s an argument for saying that you should have the first one at 10 years of age. This was a mid lemon in colour - lovely aromatics with white florals and petrol starting to dominate. Still up to 5 years in front of it I think. Lime and grapefruit on the palate with M minus acid. — 13 days ago

Vinaceous

Hand Pétillant Naturel White Blend

YUM!!

We were kindly #gifted this bottle to try and oh my, I’m in love. It is so delicious and definitely worth hunting out if you ask me 😉

👀 cloudy apple juice
👃tropical fruit, dragonfruit, lemon sherbet, raro cordial sachet
👅 mineral dry, candy but not sweet if that makes sense, lemon lime, delicate balance across the mouth, light body, sherbet finish

Definitely should be available in 1.5l magnums as the standard 750ml bottle is just not enough 😋

Grange South Australia Shiraz 1997

Solid, well rounded Penfolds Grange. Wasn’t mind blowing but certainly not disappointing either. — 5 days ago

Bin 2 South Australia Shiraz Mataro 2019

Big and muscular, but I wouldn’t call it jammy or a fruit bomb. Maybe the mataro mellowed it a bit? I like Aussie Shiraz, and Penfolds is usually very good ( as was this). Big plum/ cherry action. Thanks bro. — 10 days ago

Best's

Great Western Riesling 2016

Aromas of talc, honeysuckle, lime and kaffir leaf (should go well with a curry). No Kero. Palate is almost off dry - lime, under ripe peach, touch of pear, low acid - drinking beautifully. Amazing value for $26. — a month ago

Jim Barry

The Florita Clare Valley Riesling 2013

The chosen white wine for the Downs Club Magnum dinner This was a cellar release from Jim Barry recently purchased by the Club. Noticeable Kerosene aromas. Lime and mineral on the palate developing toasty maturity. A long life ahead coming from magnum. The Florita vineyard was famous in the 70s and 80s for the brilliant long lived Riesling made by John Vickery for the Leo Buring label. This wine given 98 points by James Halliday. — a month ago

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2017

Often referred to as “Baby Grange,” ‘16: blend of 51% Cab Sauv & 49% Shiraz, aged 12 months in American oak, partly in previous-vintage Grange casks. Dark Ruby with aromas of ripe black fruits, sweet and complex spice. On palate juicy blackberry flavors with notes of tobacco, cacao and toasty spices. Well balanced with acidity, fine ripe tannins, long finish ending with smoky spice, fruit & well integrated with oak, drink over next 10 years+, tasting well, will only get better. — 7 days ago

Domaine A

Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

See 2 previous notes - the most recent in February last year which is consistent with this tasting. Easily the most concentrated and rich Cabernet I’ve ever had from Tasmania. Mint, coffee beans, cassis and Cocoa on the nose. Medium plus bodied. Seamless. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance being Merlot Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot 4/4/2. Growing ripe Cabernet in Tasmania is achievable if you get the right site. — 5 days ago

Congrats on Australia winning the Ashes and crushing England 4-0-1 in 5 test matches. Quite a performance!

@Byron Hewett Yes it was a pity England weren’t more competitive. Not playing Broad in all tests was a mistake. It unearthed some future stars in Green and Boland and Crawley for England.

Henschke

Keyneton Euphonium Barossa Shiraz Blend 2016

Just a glass (and a small one at that)! After the Joshua Cooper Pinot this was quite sweet and pruney with lush blackberry and chocolate flavours Went well with the Waygu Beef dish. The quality of Henschke shining through even in their lesser Cuvées. — 15 days ago
