Vasse Felix

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Similar notes to 29 weeks ago. A classical Margaret River nose - herbs, geranium, bay leaf and cassis. A medium weight palate without the weight of the top Cuvée the Heytesbury. — 9 days ago

Cape Mentelle

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 1984

Another gift for my Cabernet tasting - thanks Andrew. - proving that even though this wine won the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1985 (for the Best One Year Old Dry Red at Royal Melbourne) it is made to cellar and was brilliant in its 36th year. No detailed notes - had all the classic Cabernet descriptors typical of the district including Mint and herbaceous Tomato Bush aromas. A lovely old wine. — 21 days ago

Diana Madeline Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2009

On Saturday I conducted a Cabernet tasting at home with 8 mates. The theme was 2009 Bordeaux v Margaret River. See previous note of 80 weeks ago. Wine No. 3. A nice red pepper note amongst the leafiness, cedar and red fruits. Wonderful balance which is a hallmark of Cullen Cabernet. More elegance than power. — 22 days ago

William Shiraz 2011

Dense Crimson in colour. The nose and palate on this full bodied red are more reminiscent of a South Australian Red than the medium bodied savoury style typical of the Hunter Valley. Just the faintest hint of HV sweat and earth. This showed rich ripe black currant with smooth tannins. It’s a pity there was a time when HV wines tried to mimic the SA styles which were more popular. This is an example of that. Quite a good wine but not true to its origins. Thankfully the main HV wineries have returned to their original style - think Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea, Brokenwood Graveyard and Tyrells Individual Paddocks. — 4 days ago

We loved this. Fruit forward with no signs of aging. 13.5% abv. Comes across as a cool climate example. My mates down under are getting it done. — 8 days ago

Vanya Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

At my Cabernet tasting on the weekend. Thanks for bringing this gem Ken Gargett. This is Cullen’s top Cuvée - I had never tried before. One of those wines that is so balanced and medium bodied that you don’t think it will cellar whereas in reality it will cellar for 30 years. There was some lively discussion on this point at the table. Plum and dark cherry notes. A wonderful wine but a little expensive. Postscript: Only 261 bottles made. — 23 days ago

Alma May Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Wine No. 8 in the field of 8 Cabernets from the 2009 vintage tasted blind and it proved to be the consensus Winner by a narrow margin over the Les Forts. I loved this and the Palmer 8 years ago at the Cape Mentelle tasting and they remain stunning wines. A wonderful perfume of red flowers, plums, and earth. Medium to Full Bodied with great length. Two of the tasters, long time wine professional, Ken Gargett and Dr Mark Welsh ( head of the Chevaliers in Australia) each gave this wine 98 points. This was Margaret River at its best. I still have to post some random wines brought by the guests - some of which were stellar. Me being the host provided the 8 Cabernets tasted blind.

Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2014

I have a hard time believing that you can pull this much weight from Chardonnay and still have a significant acidic backbone without having added exogenous acid to the mix...otherwise very good — 18 days ago

Has been an excellent Chardonnay for a long time in Australia and does cellar. I have had excellent examples over 10+ years of age. Usually in the fuller bodied peaches and cream style with a dried pear character. I would have thought natural acidity.

Also 2014 was a very good vintage in Margaret River as will 2018 when released.

@Bob McDonald thanks Bob i will surely keep my eye out actually not easy to find it here in Quebec. As for the acidity it is just my own hypothesis i have never seen this level of weight and acidity co-exist in a white before so just surprised

Margaret River Semillon 2013

Easy going medium plus bodied white that surprises with herbs and spice as if kissed by lemongrass, mezcal, and cilantro. — 13 days ago
