La Marginale Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc 2022

Really an excellent cab franc. Have had stuff from Thierry Germain before but not this bottling. Perfect with a variety of Syrian dishes at Damas in Montreal. Bright, restrained fruit, excellent acid. Nice finish. — a year ago

Vieux Chemin Châteauneuf-du-PapeRed Rhône Blend 2020

Intense red almost purple. In the nose nice minerality, umami, herbs with a strong thime finish. On the palate black cherries, leather, blackberry. Nice minerality with balanced and moderate tannins. Overall great wine. Perfect companion for a rare steak. — 4 years ago

Les Mémoires Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc 2018

Lyle Fass
9.5

Beautifully expressive Cabernet Franc nose of red currant, sour cherry, cassis, moss, lavender, thyme and an enormous amount of rosemary. The palate initially offers glorious, creamy red fruit, excellent purity, freshness and ripe, melting tannins, with remarkable precision for 2018. That first open-bottle preview is seductive, but air brings a firmer, chewier and more tannic structure, while a small alcoholic seam becomes increasingly pronounced. Still juicy, vibrant and unmistakably Cabernet Franc, but less seamless than the opening suggested.

Day two is the better showing. The nose is deeper, with more cassis and the same nervous herbal energy. The palate has rounded out, gaining a touch of opulence and a gorgeous creamy texture, while the alcohol has largely integrated and the balance is now excellent. Beautiful wine.

Coeur de Roches Meursault Chardonnay 2019

2019 vintage. Obvs super youthful and that translates here to a large, super fresh lime component. Better than good mineral presence. The crisper side of Meursault. — 3 years ago

Generally not a big fan of cabernet franc, but this was recommended to me as an especially good example. Glad I tried it. Not heavy, but distinct notes of fruit and earth/leather. Really good abd sophisticated, especially at this price ($28 I think). Recommended by Lower Falls Wine Shop in Wellesley, MA. — 2 months ago

Chinon Cabernet Franc 2005

Beautiful Loire Cabernet Franc, just a touch of green in the fruit, but with that cool climate feel, long finish, terrific wine, thanks to Eric Texier for telling us (my wine group) that Lenoir was making great Cab Franc!! — 10 months ago

@Ira Schwartz, all true, he took us to Domaine Chamonard (we were so cold tasting there that our teeth were literally chattering), also Lapalu and Janin in Beaujolais, always in his own cellars, and we’d spend a day at the Marche aux Vins in Ampuis!! In addition to making fabulous wines himself, Eric was so generous with his knowledge and connections, Lenoir in Chinon being another one!!

@Doug Powers I know it’s all true. Some of the wine folks I hang out with are close to him and every time he would visit NYC they would have dinners with him.

Big deep grapey nose. Tons of granite and blackberry but also red berries as well. A very evocative and encompassing nose. Some pepper, spice and herbs as well. Complex and inviting. Palate is soft and structured with an intense pepperiness. Supple and melty with gorgeous red fruits and also blackberry. Very pure and perfectly balanced with really nice tannins. Excellent wine. — 3 years ago
