green pepper, barnyard. cliche to say it but quite old world in style. Terrific value, lots of complexity. medium tannins, medium + acid. — a year ago
Structured stuff. Lots of plum and cassis and boysenberry. Smell a little like green bell pepper and some cigars (cliche I know). Tannin smooths out with some open time. Also smells a bit hot. — 6 years ago
joined a new 'wine club' that's supposed to send me surprise 'authentic' (not mass produced) wines that are 'for me'.
i started 🙈 tasting (my wife covered the label for me).
this was a cliche Bourgogne white. but a well made one. i half guessed it was bourgogne. but wasn't sure this is such an easy right guess. my other option was an oaked sa chenin blanc.
firm but mellow oak-ness, citrus and hints of stone fruit (apple and peach).
full body.
high acidity.

not my style but well made wine.
my wife supposedly didn't like it, but the bottle was empty before dinner was served. we halfed it very easily. — 6 years ago
Starting to show a bit of brown around the edge—prob should have been popped earlier. But still a pleasant dinner companion. Definitely veering towards the lighter side of Sonoma Pinot... alcohol shy of 13...light mouthfeel... but enough cherry/berry to balance the acids and resolving tannins. I know it’s a bit of a cliche, but worked well with home broiled Alaskan King Salmon and farm grown late summer corn. — 7 years ago
Idk this my fave wine from CH despite the critics. Power, grace, blah blah blah cliche but they coexist here. Lemon curd and macadamia — 8 years ago
Very good! Enjoyed this. Balanced. — 2 months ago
美発泡のスモーキーなオレンジに近い白 — 9 months ago
See previous. This wine, bought basically blind, delivers as the cliche says… way above it’s price point.
My post Covid mouth still is reductive, but the Sangiovese fruit comes singing through, wood too. Some cocoa on the nose, lots of iron/sanguine on the palate.
Refreshing acidity to boot.

— 6 years ago
Big plum and jammy nose. Blackberry and cherries in the front. Really big. Smooth vanilla notes to finish. Remarkably balanced for something this big. Really a great CA wine that can stand up to a big ribeye w a Gorgonzola sauce. A bit of a cliche but would indeed pair well w/weed. Perhaps suggestive placebo effect, but it doesn’t suck! — 7 years ago
Thanks to 2 wine store owners that I became good friends with over the years I’ve had the opportunity to have a good stash of Vatan. For me Vatan is one of those wines that adheres to the cliche, “ there are no great wines just great bottles”. In this instance it was a great bottle. Intoxicating aromas of lychee, lime and florals. One of those wines you’re happy just to smell. There is no disappointment on the palate. Beautiful balance and texture, nothing out of place. Layers of concentrated fruit; mango, green almonds, star fruit and lemons. Ripe fruit that is fresh and managed by the wonderful acid. A finish you never want to end. The only flavor missing, which I often find in Vatan, is “spearmint”. — 2 months ago
Acquired in the Maucaillou tasting room in Bordeaux in 2008, then transported back to the states in a suitcase full of laundry, deposited in my cellar where it has remained until today.
Transparent and fresh. Almost pure ruby, showing only a smidge of bricking at the edges and not much age at all. Very pretty. Earthy nose of no. 2 pencil and old spices that gradually opens to red fruits. Maybe a cliche but this is on the Burgundian side of Bordeaux. So succulent; vibrating with red fruit and lively acids. — 5 years ago

Every Bordeaux cliche in the book: graphite, cedar box, soy, cèpes, wet earth, five spice, forest floor. At its peak, gone completely secondary in terms of aromas/flavors...yet vital, vigorous and quite obviously has another gear left. Properly 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, and not blemished with either drying doses of new oak or the skull-splitting level of alcohol that makes drinking most modern classified growths a grotesque test of endurance. — 7 years ago
