Durbacher Schloss Grohl Kabinett Trocken Klingelberger Riesling 2019

Dry. Went back to the Alte Wache in Freiburg i. Breisgau. What a City! Had this with a Matjeshering Sandwich. Food made the difference - this is a match in heaven. Perfect with salty oily fish. I always pair Matjes herring or any pickled version with Riesling. Classic Kabinett, mandarine, faint diesel really just a touch, surprisingly some tannins - smidgen tart. Lemon 🍋. — 6 months ago

Weingut von der Mark

Alte Reben Spätburgunder 2018

Lyle Fass
9.3

My first Von Der Mark wine. And wow. He is a Pinot specialist from Baden. Vines near Freiburg like Möbitz. A Dutch fellow who is also a MW. I zoomed with him for an hour before he sent me samples. The right people liked his wines and that was enough for me to get samples.

Ridiculously high toned nose. Just incredible. Huge Pinot aromas that are classic and delightful at the same time. It smells like Chambolle like it’s crazy. Or a killer Vosne Romanee Village wine. It’s one of the Jost lifted aromatic wines I’ve had. Usually wines have an aromatic ceiling. This has none. Straight to your brain. There’s a citrus undertone. Ethereal floral complexity. Elite. It’s broad but filled out and clear. There is also a lovely earthy funk. Wow. Vosne Romanee violets. This is crazy aromatic. Like elite. Palate is so good. This is so elegant, has such terrific mouthfeel. Terrific compact fruit intermingled with crazy spice. Juicy and so clean. Sour, mid season cherries form a sweet/tart interplay that is terrific. Awesome ripeness and just insanely fresh, deep, pure and fleshy cherry fruit. This has guts as well. Sweet, ripe tannins and minerals abound in the finish, which is crazy long. This is as easy to ponder as it is to drink.

Enderle & Moll

Buntsandstein Pinot Noir 2021

Darker than the Muschelkalk with more weight. The M. is grown on Mussel based limestone. This is grown on red sandstone. Like the one used for the Cathedral in Freiburg. Much more approachable then the M. Dark cherries, turmeric, black tea, elderberry, hint black currant. I don’t know but - i just feel sorry for the many people who never had a chance to try these wines. The Muschelkalk is often limited to 1-2 barrels and the Buntsandstein to 3-4. The Liason their mid level wines are more broadly available and also very good. Will be at the winery in May for a barrel tasting. A ridiculous value for the money if you can find it. — 9 months ago

Weingut Bernhard Huber

R Schlossberg Großes Gewächs Spätburgunder 2010

Burgundian Grand Cru from Germany decant 24h’s. Made by the late Bernhard Huber who died unfortunately of cancer much too early. Dark and big 🍷. Almost too highly extracted for my taste. Cassis, bark, mushrooms 🍄, dark berries - blackberry/elderberry blend! Direct from the Winery not available in the USA 😳. Very highly recommended! Visit the winery if you can it’s close to Freiburg in Baden the son is now running the show. — 7 years ago

Blankenhornsberger Doktorgarten GG Rotwein Spätburgunder 2014

A big wine. Sells for 60 Euros which is steep and at 14,5% it clocks in. Cherry, non offensive and just too nice. For sure a Pinot on the top of its game. But for me it does not really provide a sense of place like for example the ones from Enderle & Moll. — 2 years ago

Ziereisen

Viviser Gutedel 2019

Tastes like a high quality white Burgundy. A profound wine of power and beauty. Blew all other 10 Gutedels/Chasselas‘s out of the water. Although my co-Tasters from Baden did not agree because his style and vinfication is different. Reductive. Quite stinky nose which blows off. Awesome, especially the next day. Hazelnut, plenty of acid, marble dust, lime, hint pine needles. Some tannins. Build to last. This is great! At a friends house in Freiburg im Breisgau. — 2 years ago

Trocken Lemberger 2012

Very nice Lemberger, in its prime. Rich yet lean, very dry with pronounced acidity. A hint of Italian influence, with its tannins and a slightly bitter note on the finish. — 5 years ago
