Warren Strauss Corton-Charlemagne Chardonnay 1983

Night one at Bern’s. Chosen in the cellar for its color and condition. Nice gold color in the glass. Killer nose from the start. Notes of lemons, cardamom, sautéed oranges, ginger, tan spice, honey, apricot and some vanilla. Nice fruit in the mouth. Quiet acidity at first but with air some nice structure grows. Evolved/improved all night and really delivered. — a year ago

Clos du Roi Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir

2013 in Liverpool. Perfect with the venison I was having. Fresh wet earth aromas, no sweetness at all, elegant and very easy to drink, nice balance, tart cherry and cranberry notes. — 4 years ago

Hallgartener Schönhell Spätburgunder Spätlese Trocken 2003

Well well well. Like a Morey but with forest fruit. Incredibly elegant wine, harnessing wild, crunchy red-black fruit underpinned by a stony forest floor thing. I’d love to hide this in a grand cru burg tasting; the style reminds me of 80s Rapet Corton, the terroir is unquestionably something else. Fabulous and unexpected. — a year ago

Beaune Les Cents Vignes 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

Pop and pour, notes from 2 hrs open. On the nose: lovely plum.and blackberry, oak spice, soft cocoa powder, soft herbs in the background; very clearly delineated flavors. On the palate: fantastic acidity and density; spicy strawberry, and dark fruit...excellent tannin on the spicy finish. This is definitely structured to improve with some age, but it is already so drinkable now. Yum! — 3 years ago

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2019

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2019 Corton Grand Cru has a rather conservative and earthy bouquet, but is well-defined with slightly darker fruit than its peers. Faint touches of fresh tobacco emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and a fine thread of acidity, but is a little stocky, as you might expect of a Corton. There’s a slight abruptness on the finish, but time should shave its corners. Give it another couple of years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2023)

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 1980

Night two at Bern’s. From a great looking bottle with a good fill and awesome color. Medium gold color in the glass. Vibrant and youthful looking for its age. Quiet nose at first, and slow to open as it gains air. Then all of a sudden it jumps up to offer notes of apricot, white acacia flowers, stones and some vanilla. Decent structure. Light acidity. Overall it’s good, not great and did not have the emotion and exotic notes that the 83 Rapet CC had the night before. — a year ago
