Muddy Arch

Enderle & Moll

Baden Spätburgunder Rosé 2021

2021. Courtesy of @Pinotman /// Andreas. Disturbed, lake bottom brown color. Slightly muddy and tart nose. Medium body. Not my cup of tea but there is an immaculate, front palate flavor moment of perfectly aged red Burg/Pinot Noir of, say, 15-18 years. Everything else is held in check during that time. That safe harbor in the storm is my take away. 4.1.26. — a month ago

I do not agree Burgundy priced itself essentially out of the market for normal and especially for young people. CA Pinot’s have done the same and are often beyond > 14%. That really just leaves Oregon and German or for that matter Swiss Pinots in a not totally over the top price range. Over there they are essentially 1/2 the price. Here they are heavily tariffed.

This particular wine was a Rose was 20$. I have not seen in the last 15 years an American Rose which can match Enderle & Moll. In fact i rarely see any Rose Pinot made - stateside - why? Because it simply does not make business sense if you can charge 50$ for the reds coming from the same grapes.

I did not mention rose’ exclusively. I did say Pinot’s. I also mentioned more than one area besides the states that are better suited for Pinot Noir. I believe I mentioned at least three areas w/ an etc. on that subject. As to your point on value, if you google Pinot Noir roses, you will find plenty of them under or close enough to $20 stateside. My only other point, was on sweetness. This one is sweeter than I prefer as would many of the others you may find at a $20 price point. I prefer one’s that are dry. Often, from Spain out of Tempranillo. But I am not here to debate or argue wine opinions. I was only leaving an agreeing comment on Scott’s post. Whether his reasons and mine are similar for not necessarily gravitating to this one, it is just a comment. I’d like to think that is still ok here. Cheers!

Pinot Noir

Muddy pale ruby. Super expressive; pure sweet strawberry with spine of cedar spice. Different. Sweet red fruit, delicate mouthfeel, but powerful flavour. Classic power without weight. Low acid and tannin but not without length. — 5 years ago

La Tosa

Vignamorello Gutturnio D.O.C. Superiore Barbera Blend 2023

Nose - chalk, soil and strawberry candies. Appearance - really turbid and muddy looking. Looks unfiltered but it’s not a natural wine producer. Medium weight though despite all the particles in it which makes it really interesting. Main tasting characteristics- unripe cherry and tart plum. Finishes with a little acid and zing but clean if that makes any sense. Really nice alternative to Cab Sav to go with steak! — a year ago

Château Rol Valentin

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

From a 375ml.
PnP a bit tight, but luxurious dark fruits,
tannins prevalent but chewy.
Lots of Blue/Black fruit and muddy gravel. Loamy, calls for protein.
Some comments said this was drying. I get that, but not to the point of being unpleasant. Chasing LdH ‘04 is a tough act to follow. This previously garage wine 90-10 Merlot/Cab Franc definitely treads the blacker, more treacly edge.
Not heavy, but black.

Nice evolution and well integrated. 92 that pushes 93.

The other wine from the great Napa producer, Philip Togni.

The mouthfeel is supple, round, soft, yet meaty and tarry tannins. Ripe, juicy, rich; blackberries, baked plum for days, dark cherries, black raspberries, hues of raspberries & boysenberries. Black licorice, berry cola, muddy, volcanic clay, herbaceous notes, soft baking spices, slightly, melted chocolate, dark spice with a touch of heat, coffee, dry crushed, rocks, dry stem, dry tobacco, new leather, oak to cedar shavings, volcanic ash, dark, slightly withering, red, blue flowers framed in a field of endless violets, rainfall acidity, great balance, nice tension/structure and a smartly polished finish that last a full minute.

If you own, I would drink over the next 3-4 years before it starts to slide.

Domaine De La Grand'Cour (Jean-Louis Dutraive)

Chapelle des Bois Fleurie Gamay 2018

So I guess this is a Gamay from the Rhône? Didn’t know such a thing existed but this is the best “Rhône” I’ve had in a long time - mostly bc it’s a Beaujolais through and through - classic muddy/cloudy consistency, intense fruit on the nose. Only issue is that it’s still very sparkly on the palate, so definitely needs a few more years. Or a very long decant. Tons of potential — 2 years ago

Château Pouget

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

2016 vintage. Last tasted 11.21.21. Gained more weight since then, lost the overt prettiness and has gotten slightly muddy. Def state of transition. Nose has improved tho and contains a bit of that treasured old library/leather/dust about. Should be interesting to revisit in a year or two — 4 years ago

Stolpman Vineyards

Estate Grown Santa Ynez Valley Syrah 2009

Nose has ripe plum, milk chocolate powder, ripe blackberry, ripe black cherry, green pepper in muddy garden soil, decaying roses and over-ripe red cherries.

Palate has milk chocolate covered cherry, wet leather, warmed black licorice, charred wood, ripe plum, grippy tannins and a very long finish. Started out a little hot (14.5% ABV) after a 4 hour decant, but settled in nicely afterwards.

Last bottle of the 2009 vintage from a 6-pack purchased in Nov 2012. Anyone continuing to hold this in proper storage, may do do until 2025-30.
