Top 5 wine from @Larry Schaffer in my opinion. The fruit sings in this bottle!! Paired with a Sockeye Salmon Salad — 18 days ago
My first experience with Ferren, and wanted to check in ahead of the release next month. Knowing the vineyard source and the winemaker’s background, I had very high hopes.
When I first opened it, I was taken aback at how acidic it was. Spritz-like for the first 30mins, but the back of the palate had a good bit of richness, so I figured this just needed time to open. Bingo. At two hours in, this hit stride. It started off similar to Aubert’s Larry Hyde & Sons chard due to its acidic nature, but as it shed that, it became more reminiscent of Aubert’s Powder House and Kistler’s McCrea. It doesn’t have the same texture that Aubert does, but it has more richness and complexity than what I’ve found Kistler to have (consistently). Very Sonoma Coast. Lemon cream, tart citrus, dash of sea salt and lemon rind on the nose. Not quite waxy on the palate, but it gained heft and showed amazing weight when compared to its acidic lift/structure. Ripe Asian pear, powdered lemon bar, honeysuckle, and a vein of “minerality” down the mid palate. Only getting better! — a month ago
This wine was given to me by a friend who has since past on. I waited for a special occassion to try it and honour him. Lovely nose, strawberry, dry, ate it with Jaimie Oliver's peach & cheese Keebobs. The two together was wonderful. Thanks Larry! I'll never forget you... — 24 days ago
Founded in 1993 by Larry Turley and makes almost 50 wines, vast majority of are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. Juvenile is composed of a variety of young vines that have been replanted in several of their old vine sites. Ruby with aromas of red fruits and jolt of pepper spice. Palate shows fresh cherry, strawberry and blueberry flavors with pepper spice that calmed down after 30 min. Fine tannins, vivid acidity, nice balance, long finish ending with a fruit character and slight notice of alcohol. Good value! — a month ago
Ripe, round gold in the glass, nice medium weight on the palate. Lychee, ripe apricot, ripe peach and a bit of earthy funk. This wine rocks at six years of age. Still displaying amazing fruit/acid balance and probably capable of a couple more years. Larry Schaffer deserves full props for beautiful Rhône varietals at nice QPR. Cheers! — 3 months ago
